Description:

2009 release, the third album from the multi-platinum singer/songwriter. Free is a collection of songs that showcase the true spirit of his incredible talent. Following up on Gavin's self-titled sophomore release which included the hit 'In Love With A Girl', Free showcases Gavin's versatility and soulful roots to form a collection of new songs, previously unrecorded fan favorites and a stunning cover of Chris Whitley's 'Indian Summer'. Joining Gavin on this record are such virtuosos as Audley Freed on guitar (Black Crowes), and Charley Drayton on drums (Keith Richards, Johnny Cash) who help give Free a rich, organic depth and help take Gavin's natural ability to create memorable songs into a new direction

I hate it when talented artists have their music overproduced and their vocals buried under sythesizers, background singers and computer-generated beats. So I was THRILLED when it was announced that Gavin (who's at his best when it's just his voice and a piano) was coming out with a more personal, "raw" album. But "Free" is a little TOO raw.

I'm a fan of Gavin (met him in person - such a sweethart!), and my favorite album of all time is Chariot Stripped. I was hoping "Free" would be something similar, but instead it goes beyond "stripped" into more like "naked . . . by the side of a dirt road . . . getting a really bad sun burn."

The songs on it drag painfully. They are slow and heavy without much substance . . . like school cafeteria mashed potatoes. If you're going to put together an album with less than 10 tracks, they all better be darned good, and unfortunately, only 3 or 4 of them are.

"Stay" is one of those good tracks, which in and of itself, saved this review from being a two-star instead of a three-star. It's a heart-wrenching plea of a man begging his lover not to go, and one of those songs you can play several times in a row because it touches you so deeply. "Dancing Shoes" is also good, though the melody sounds strikingly similar to the opening notes of the Mark Cohn classic "Walking in Memphis".

All in all, this album sounds like either a) someone caught gavin singing/humming in the shower and recorded whatever he was singing or b) the record label wanted to make some money by selling an album of leftover tracks that didn't quite make the cut for his previous cds.

I feel awful about writing a negative review for this because, again, I'm a huge Gavin fan and he said this album was his most personal. But a buyer should know what to expect before purchasing this particular work. I'm still super-excited to see what the fine Mr. Degraw comes out with next, and I'll be the first in line to pick it up because I love that soulful voice of his.

4Very Personal  Oct 12, 2009
Maybe it's just me but Gavin sounds VERY different on this album. When I played the first song "Indian Summer" I didn't even recognize his voice. Only by knowing the way that Gavin sings and the way he escalates his voice at certain points did I not pull the CD out the player to make sure I put in the right album.

Gavin brings us into HIS world with sultry tracks that showcase his ability to sing with not only soul, compassion and a little bit of groove, but an intimate look into his feelings and his world.

Gavin is a true musician, both lyrically as well as an instrumentalist. I look forward to his next album (whenever that may be). I'm truly a fan for life. I'll follow Gavin in whatever direction he leads. I had to pull out Chariot to reminisce of the first time I heard of Mr. DeGraw.

Two thumbs up for this album!

5Oh Gavin =)  Aug 12, 2009
Basically, Gavin Degraw did an amaaaaazing job on this album. He was true to himself and his style, and he sang each song with passion. The songs are easy to relate to, but each as its own deep meaning as well. Gavin's voice speaks for itself, and his piano and guitar skills are exquisite. I can't wait for his next album, and for his brother's album which comes out August 18th!
