5What a talent!!!  Feb 18, 2010
I had never heard about Alice Smith until I saw this album reviewed in a magazine. I will never regret taking a chance to hear what all the praise was about. This is no cookie-cutout singer who can be sold in any one category. Her voice has a folksy twang and at the same time a rockers edge but with R&B soul... I listen to her and I remember Pheobe Snow (who is also impossible to jam into just one style of music) and Angela Bofill (whose voice had an almost other-worldly ability of switching from one register to another and one feeling to another, drawing you into the story). And I get that from just listening to Alice...watching her is extremely moving. She definitely gets into the song...each one. My favorites are "Do I" (a wailing dirge that almost made me cry the first time I heard it), "Secrets" and "Love Endeavor". I'd love to see how she grows in time artistically, and this CD may have to grow on you; I've found my appreciation growing more with each listen. But the girl is definitely worth checking out.

Fine CD, Alice Smith is a great singer and song writer.
Reminds me of a young Stevie Wonder at the height of his talent.

5Mellow, Not Boring  Apr 20, 2009
Even though this cd is a a few years old, and I am late on hearing of Alice Smith, it is jammin! There arent many people that you can say sound unique but her voice and songs really are. Her songs are very souful, not blues not country not r and b but a good blend with a dash of wanna be rock. if you needed to compare her, maybe you could put it as a mix between Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Eyrkah Badu but not really, she is her own artist. and I actually listen to the cd all the way through and not want to skip a song and that rarely happens.

wish that there was more out there from her.

5Effortlessly flawless!!  Dec 02, 2008
I discovered Alice Smith's music only last week, on the recommendation of a friend and wow!! Smith is a thirty year old singer/songwriter and her classy debut "For lovers, dreamers & me" displays her various musical influences; Jazz, Soul, Blues, Country and Rock, perfectly showcasing her commanding 4 octave vocals which critics have compared to Tina Turner's or even Billie Holiday. I would add India.Arie and Nina Simone.

Opening is the horn peppered Beatles-esque "Dream" with dreamy harmonies. "Woodstock" has a trippy guitar feel and a bouncy refrain, while "Gary song" is a piano driven song with snarled soulful vocals, and tempo shifts from insistent (Motown-like) to calm.

The Rock/Blues "New religion" finds her singing "Give me some new religion / Something that I can feel / Give me a new tomorrow / Bring it on and make it real", while the calm bass-heavy reverb-filled "Do I" has a heavy Reggae feel, and a smouldering, drawn vocal performance lamenting the end of a relationship.

The gentle "Fake is the new real" features quietly snarling stabs of guitar with Smith declaring "Bona fide is the old deal / Fake is the new real" (while taking a look at pop culture), while the piano sprinkled "Desert song" is heavily steeped in the Blues. The classy ballad "Know that I..." has a timeless quality. "Secrets" is an airy, jazzy ballad, while closing cut "Lost endeavor" has a lilting faint Caribbean feel.

There is so much sonic variety, each time a new song started, my brother would ask again "Who is this?" The album received a Grammy nomination in the Best Urban/Alternative category, and I know we'll hear much more from this incredible talent in the near future.

5this voice is so amazing!  Sep 02, 2008
the lyrics are amazing, but the voice is phenomenal. This girl can sing! I heard her for the first time watching a how-to-style hair video on YouTube. Amazing!
