A Huge Accomplishment! Dec 06, 2009 5 Stars = Masterpiece
"Flying in a Blue Dream," is my favorite of Satriani's. Here, Joe goes for a more gut wrenching sound than on his previous, "Surfin' with the Alien," he adds blues elements that makes this album's impact to the ears/brain hit harder & heavier. A big example of this is the monster, "Big Bad Moon!" Joe just wails, rattling the blues with killer dynamics of his awe inspiring technique, oh, & one more thing, he sings! "Flying in a Blue Dream," the titular song, is just a gorgeous piece of guitar wizardry, melodic & ethereal, this song is well worthy of its title. Another vocal piece, "I Just Can't Slow Down," zips along with a monster mid song guitar extravaganza! "Mystical Potato Grove Thing," is just that, a mystical groove, with great guitar flourishes, & even a little middle eastern vibe at the start & middle. "Headless," is another bluesy song, or I should say ditty, that has a great harmonica in it. "Strange," is a funky thumper with some great bass lines. "I Believe" is the most subdued song on the album, but it's lyrics of being positive are sincere & well worth the listen. "One Big Rush," is just a guitar propelled instrumental. "The Phone Call" is probably the most blues influenced tune here, while not the strongest song on the album, but hey, 18 songs are hard to pump out & still make it interesting, & its still interesting! "Day at the Beach" is a short, but pretty instrumental. "Back to Shalla-Bal" is another very memorable guitar ditty. "Ride" is a riff rocker that has some killer guitar passages. "The Forgotten Part I & II" are a voyage of beautiful melodic guitar. "The Bells of Lal Part I & II" are more exotic guitar smoke, taking on a funky twist. Lastly, "Into the Light" is an appropriate ending for this album.
The 18 songs on "Flying in a Blue Dream," may be to much Satriani for some to digest, & it is true that all songs are not equal here, but considering the HUGE amount of music on this disc, of greatly varying styles, Satriani has to be greatly respected for pulling off something damn near impossible, a great album!
First Rate Album Oct 27, 2009 I bought the album "Surfing With The Alien" by Joe Satriani a long time ago. Suffice it to say that if the album would have been a vinyl LP, I would have worn it out long ago. I just didn't tire of it. It became, perhaps, the favorite CD in a collection of several hundred. Well, at least one of the favorites.
As such, I wanted a second recording by this guitar genius, but I didn't know much about his CD offerings. I bought "Flying in a Blue Dream" CD on the basis of a Amazon recommendation. I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, please. "Blue Dream" is a fine recording and I can easily give it five stars on it's merits alone. My disappointment came with the vocals, which amounts to about half of the album. Again, please don't get me wrong. Joe Satrianni is an excellent vocalist and the songs are very good. I have no problem here. The problem is I love Satriani's solo instrumental music and the "Blue Dream" album just doesn't fill that need. Otherwise, it's a first rate album and I'd strongly recommend it. Meanwhile, I'm back to listening to "Surfing With the Alien." Man, that is just outstanding!

Bland-esque Jan 10, 2009 Typical electric soloist set of mediocre compositions expanded upon with the occasional gut-wrenching guitar flights of fancy. Besides for a few conscious attempts instrumental inspirations, it is a fairly formulaic and dated production, where withered riffs belie technical prowess. Wish there could have been more atmospheric stuff truer to what thematic opening and closing songs suggested.
Must Have For Satch Fans Jan 06, 2009 Every Joe Satriani album is good in it's own way, so it's hard to pick
favorites but I would put this one near the top of the list. And if your not interested in joe's vocal skills- not to worry he only sings on
a few songs. The album is still mostly instrumental.
