 First Rate Album Oct 27, 2009
I bought the album "Surfing With The Alien" by Joe Satriani a long time ago. Suffice it to say that if the album would have been a vinyl LP, I would have worn it out long ago. I just didn't tire of it. It became, perhaps, the favorite CD in a collection of several hundred. Well, at least one of the favorites.
As such, I wanted a second recording by this guitar genius, but I didn't know much about his CD offerings. I bought "Flying in a Blue Dream" CD on the basis of a Amazon recommendation. I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong, please. "Blue Dream" is a fine recording and I can easily give it five stars on it's merits alone. My disappointment came with the vocals, which amounts to about half of the album. Again, please don't get me wrong. Joe Satrianni is an excellent vocalist and the songs are very good. I have no problem here. The problem is I love Satriani's solo instrumental music and the "Blue Dream" album just doesn't fill that need. Otherwise, it's a first rate album and I'd strongly recommend it. Meanwhile, I'm back to listening to "Surfing With the Alien." Man, that is just outstanding!

Typical electric soloist set of mediocre compositions expanded upon with the occasional gut-wrenching guitar flights of fancy. Besides for a few conscious attempts instrumental inspirations, it is a fairly formulaic and dated production, where withered riffs belie technical prowess. Wish there could have been more atmospheric stuff truer to what thematic opening and closing songs suggested.

Every Joe Satriani album is good in it's own way, so it's hard to pick
favorites but I would put this one near the top of the list. And if your not interested in joe's vocal skills- not to worry he only sings on
a few songs. The album is still mostly instrumental.

this cd was my first one i bought when it first came out. its very good, big bad moon is very good with a really hot guitar solo. the whole cd is good. if you like joes playing, you can not goe wrong. there is a few other tracks that are pretty darn good on this cd. its not his best one to me, but to some peaple it may be their favorite. thats how it is with reviews. it has great sound on this cd.
