Poetry in full color and whimsy May 18, 2009 My children and I are great fans of Calef Brown. His poems are accessible and whimsical. The illustrations are colorful but vary in mood. They are the perfect accompaniment to the poems and make the poems irresistible. We have also have fun memorizing them and reciting them. It appeals to their goofiness.
We recently struggled through some poems of Robert Frost. My 7 year old really wanted to "get into" them. Though she enjoyed them she had a hard time understanding them. The world he describes is far more in the past for her than when I was her age. I am glad she is willing to accept that not all poems are easy.
But, still, I want to grow a love of poetry in my children. Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky have been great as well. We've also had some success with William Blake :-).
But back to "Flamingos on the Roof" - Some of our favorite Calef Brown poems are "TV Taxi" who's punchline is the illustration, "Martian Men", "New Utensil", and "Sally". "Ten-Cent Haiku" has the added benefit of being a poem within a poem. A clear winner!
You should also look at "Polkabats and Octopus Slacks" and "Dutch Sneakers and Flea Keepers". Terrific!
This book is so cool!--Rowan, age 5 Feb 22, 2009 This is our second book by Calef Brown. My 5 year old likes to sing the poems to me. We all agree that our favorite is "Ten Cent Haiku." Now my boys (5 and 9) want to complete their library with everything Brown has written. Our first experience with Mr. Brown was "Polka Bats and Octopus Slacks." That edition had a CD of Daniel Pinkwater reading the poems. Now, whenever we read Mr. Brown's poetry, I hear Daniel Pinkwater in my head... My 5 year old wants me to say again--"This book is so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
We'll give it to all the kids we know! Jan 10, 2009 I had never heard of Calef Brown before they reviewed this book on National Public Radio.
Expecting a certain amount of reservation from regular book reviewers, I was intrigued by their absolute giddiness. They read a few excerpts, and I had to get it...despite the fact that my child was just a year old.
A year later, I can report that Flamingos on the Roof is my child's absolute (and enduring) favorite. Having a library of, oh, over 200 volumes, that's quite a feat!
What's more, every time he brings it to me, I am delighted to read it to him. It certainly beat more 'age-appropriate' material. Currently, his favorites are 'Bob' and 'Peas'. I love "Ten-Cent Haiku' and 'Tiny Baby Sphinx'. But nothing beats him repeating it to himself in the car. Bravo, Mr. Brown!
More Rollicking Fun from Calef Brown Oct 13, 2008 Calef Brown has done it again! Flamingos on the Roof continues the pattern of off-the-wall illustrations embroidered by the wonderful poetry that springs from Brown's fertile, possibly febrile, imagination. My 7 1/2 year old grandson and I have weekly telephone "poetry slams", competing to read in the most dramatic, funky, expressive way possible. This poetry couldn't be more perfect for the fun!
Every kid -- not just poetry lovers -- will be drawn to these short, hilarious poems. Every grownup who reads with a kid -- not just poetry lovers -- will not want to stop until they've reached the last page, and then want to start all over.
We love this book Sep 23, 2008 My 6 year old daughter loves this book. She has just started reading and although it's really too difficult for a 1st grader, she has several of the poems partially memorized, and with help can read these aloud. The poems and the paintings that go with them appeal to the silly sense of humor we both share. Our favorites are "Weatherbee's Diner" that mentions my home state of Maine, "Biscuits in the Wind" for it's fabulous absurdity, and when I read "Combo Tango" my daughter acts out the moves as painted in the pictures. This is a great first book of fun poetry.
