1Terrible  Apr 10, 2006
Awful space rock. Chord progressions very tired and predictable. "A Design for Life" is the only song here I can tolerate.

5Masterpiece  Dec 31, 2005
All the songs of this albums are brilliant, i haven't heard such a 100 % accuracy since Ramones selftitled album. Lirically, the Manic Street Preachers do have something to say (unlike the tons of crap we hear on the radio every day). And the music is just excellent. Interiors (song for willem de kooning) is my favourite song of the album, the vocals really hit your nerves, and the guitar dives in a supersonic limbo.
I wouldn't put the MSP among the bands of the brit pop wave, they AIN'T BRIT POP. This is a great welsh alternative rock band, not some Oasis copycats. No fancy looks, no multimedia fights between it's members, just tight, well executed, full of emotion, rock.
Get yourself a copy, this album is a jewel of the ninetys, as good as Jeff Buckley's "Grace".

I don't know much about the history of this band, nor do I care to learn after listening to some of this record. Terribly boring and uninspired. Obvious and tired chord progressions and musicianship. Vocal melodies are the type that come off the very top of your head without putting an ounce of thought into it; the type that are probably the perfect average of every single vocal melody you've ever heard throughout your entire life.

5Great album  Mar 31, 2005
While I agree with the reviewer who called them an "anti-US" band (they are) and they are among the biggest idiots in the world politically (they are....just listen to their lyrics and some of their "arguments"), this album is fantastic. A triumphant re-emergence in the wake of founding member Richey James Edwards' disappearance. Some of these songs contain his final lyrics before he vanished. Among the best songs are A Design For Life, Kevin Carter, Enola/Alone, Further Along, and Removeables. I also really like The Girl Who Wanted to Be God. A solid album and along with the harrowing The Holy Bible, their absolute peak.

5full of manics  Sep 07, 2004
I wont write about the story that surround the making of this album (lots of people took care of that already), I just wanted to tell you that trhis is probably the best album the manics ever recorded (along with the darker and angrier "holy bible"), but this is another story. Here in EMG the band displays some of their better constructed songs, the epic sound of: design for life, the girl who wantde to be god, everything must go (kind of a spector - clash sound), the guitar anthem "australia", the moving and powerful rocker "enola/alone" the great closer "no surface all feelngs", although the second part of the album seems a bit weaker (but you have to consider that the first half is no less than brilliant) this is a very solid affair and a recommended purchase, guaranteed.
