A great yet overlooked album by Emily King Nov 11, 2009 Emily King's debut album "East Side Story" is about her life as a native New Yorker. She's often compared to her labelmate Alicia Keys being that they are both bi-racial soul singers. Considering her songwriting abilities, she's more along the lines of another bi-racial singer Alana Davis- that is, if Alana did an R&B album. Her debut was produced by Chucky Thompson, whose best known for being behind the boards on Mary J. Blige's "My Life", Faith Evans' "Faith" and Frankie's "My Heart Belongs To You".
Lyrically, she's interested in telling a story mostly from a real life perspective, as evidenced on "Colorblind" in which she sings about growing up as the mixed heritage offspring of two musicians. She consoles a victim of domestic violence in the song "You Can Get By". On the song "Business Man", she takes a heartless drug dealer to task for destroying the community and the people in it. She even takes on the Bill Withers classic "Ain't No Sunshine" and does a wonderful job with it. As great as this album is, it went unnoticed by the public. If you like music with great storytelling, then "East Side Story" is the album for you.
I never received this CD. Sep 14, 2009 I never received this item. After a couple of weeks, I contacted the distributor. I was told that the item had been returned due to being shipped to a incorrect address; however, I received all of the other purchases I made at that same time. It was probably a issue with the post office in this area maybe?
Buy It Jun 21, 2009 I love this whole album. Emily King is very talented and her voice and approach to music is refreshing. I'm urprised that she got so little air time on the radio, if any. This is a good buy for anyone that is into neo-soul music.
don't sleep on Emily Jan 26, 2009 Only saw her video on Soul Sessions, so took a chance and bought the cd, and I LOVE IT!!

Great rare find....under appreciated by label!!! Sep 13, 2008 This debut release displays the great work of such a wonderful artist but was never really promoted by J Records A&R team??? This CD was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Contemporary album against mostly the heavily played stuff you hear on the bubble gum pop/rap stations. This album has really never got its true justice since nonsense music has the latter over REAL SOUL when it comes down to sales.
Emily's music crosses many genres and if you take a listen you will not be disappointed! It's just sad that the label under promoted such a wonderful CD and artist...but she will come out shining soon!!!
