2Awful "please-buy-it" effort...  Aug 14, 2009
This a "no-no" CD. Eliane has been a child prodigy (at 16 ys. old was musical director for Vinicius de Moraes in her native country, Brazil). She can play Evanish-like great jazz piano. She grew incredibly and got into the "Steps Ahead" band, when got to USA. Married great Randy Becker (and learned a lot); divorces and later on married great Marc Johnson (Bill Evans last bass player when he was around 19 or 20 ys old). Learned a *lot* more. Somewhere in the middle started to sing, with a very low-volume voice and non-distinctive. She launched a "Plays Jobim" album (very good, can't miss it with E.Gomez and J.DeJohnette), and years after she tried a "Sings Jobim" (forgettable). Still years later, improved her singing (still, it is miles and miles away from his piano playing, on the poorest axis). She is very, very good looking and very sexy when playing barefoot ("...so as not to miss the pedals high-heeled..."). The above being said, this album is a very poor effort to "commercialize" her with photoshop shots and an incredibly "elevator music type" rythm section. If you really want to know Eliane get her in "Something for You" (tribute to B.Evans), E.Elias with the Radio Danish Big Band, her own compositions and arranged and conducted by Bob Brookmeyer. Also a compiled jazz tunes under a "great jazz masters" collection. Also try her in the "Everything I Love" *jazz* CD.

4Enjoyable  Jul 14, 2009
Not a big purchaser of this genre. Very enjoyable...would buy another of her CDs.

I'd never heard of this artist before until I discovered her here on Amazon!
This is a really lovely album..everything I'd hoped for. Soft, moody, relaxing and nice voice too! Will definately look out for more of this lady's music.

2Compressed dynamics = bland music  Apr 04, 2009
I was disappointed, too. I read good things about this album, but it doesn't live up to the buzz. Why?

She has an attractive voice, but this album is over-produced. Younger listeners may not understand this, though. If you listen to the older albums by Astrud Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto, Gerry Mulligan, Stan Getz or most any Bossa album from the 60's, or more recently Rosa Passos, you will notice something right off: the sound is lively on those recordings.

Many modern recordings are have a large amount of dynamic compression, i.e. the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of the recording is diminished. This makes the quieter parts louder and the louder parts quieter. Good for listening in a car or with mp3 players, but for enjoyment at home, no. You lose one of the important dimensions of a musical performance, interplay among the performers. Here, the singer, the featured instruments and the band blend together sonicly so that the interplay between them is lost. This recording seems as if it was mixed down and down and down... like a rolling pin has flattened the sound. Also, I hear no pluck on the guitar strings. Anyone ever heard a guitar live and not hear the pluck? Or the hammer strike on a piano? This recording makes my system sound bad!

It's a very "relaxed" sound but it's a predigested sound. It is good bed-time music, though.

Dynamic compression is a technique used by Muzak. Now, it's widely used and it sucks the life out of a recording. Rolling Stone had an article about the detrimental effects of this process. I would like to hear Elaine on a Chesky recording or MA or Telarc. Listeners should go to their sites and hear the samples. They are available on Amazon, too. The performers and the customers deserve better recording than what was done for this cd.

1Warmed over Astrud  Apr 02, 2009
Astrud Gilberto sings this fluff 'Brazillian' jazz better. Eliane is much more of a talented musician and songwriter - check out 'A Long Story' which interestingly enough has been discontinued. It contains a haunting composition 'Let Me Go (Vida Real)' which is a masterpiece. Also listen to "So Far So Close'. Its pains me to hear her do this stuff.
