Description:

Doctors, Professors, Kings & Queens: The Big Ol’ Box of New Orleans takes the music of the Big Easy and puts it in the context of that vibrant city in a way that has never been done before. The four CDs feature more than 80 hits—old and new—by such artists as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Louis Armstrong, The Meters, Fats Domino, Buckwheat Zydeco and many others. The result is a spicy gumbo containing all of New Orleans’ musical styles and flavors: jazz and blues, Cajun and Zydeco, R&B and funk.

Also included is a gorgeous 84-page book that features essays and sidebars that completely explode the idea of what liner notes can be. They’ll take you by the hand through the narrow streets of the Quarter, through the Garden District and up through Bayou St. John—imparting the history alongside the colorful legends, while giving an insider’s-eye view of the city’s great (and notorious) bars and restaurants.

1A Very Disappointing Collection  Feb 24, 2010
I have to disagree with most of the reviews here. To these ears, this collection has far too many lacklustre retreads of old New Orleans tropes and not enough of the outstanding stuff from the 50s to 70s. (Get Voodoo Soul or the excellent Soul Jazz and Minit compilations if you're interested in what many would say was the New Orleans golden age of soul.)There are too many tired tracks from after 1980 to the present day which simply reproduce old styles. ( Even the Dr John song on here isn't one of his terrific original efforts but a retread of an old classic.)

Having said which, there are some good tracks mixed in with the dross - many of which you'll already know if you are a fan of New orleans r'n b. Of the newer stuff ( to me, at any rate), I liked the Iguanas and the Rebirth Jazz Band, for example. But the feeling I, for one, came away with was that New Orleans has been spent as a creative force since the 70s. I know, from songs like the brilliant supple rhythms of "Ha" by Juvenile, that that probably isn't the case;this boxset, however, would do nothing to show otherwise.

5Tremendous  Apr 26, 2009
Leaving aside the nit picking, and which cuts should be in or out, just
listen to this disc for the sure enjoyment of hearing this wide selection of New Orleans music. The songs are wonderful. The overrriding theme is that of joy, and it is fascinating to hear the different styles which express this joy. Highly recommended.

5New Orleans at it's best.  Sep 15, 2008
This is a very comprehensive look at New Orleans for someone who has been there many times and wants to reminisce.

5Big Easy in a Box  Aug 24, 2008
This box of New Orleans music is the essence of the mossy City that Care Forgot. Each song reveals a particular characteristic of the city and her distinctive sound; quirky, high-spirited and strong. Wish amazon did oyster poor boys.

5Really great but could be made better with very little effort  Oct 12, 2007
This is a great collection that could be improved through a few substitutions (I would have chosen Johnny Adams' "Reconsider Me" and Irma Thomas'"I Done Gone Over It", instead of the ones The Shout Factory made) but that's nitpicking. It's a great collection, it sounds great and a wide range of New Orleans music is represented. Well done.
