Sookie's New Orleans book Nov 18, 2009 This is a good book. I really hated that you had to go back and read the short story to get the back story (something I wish I knew before I read it), but it didn't hurt me from figuring out what happened. I have read all of the back stories and all that now, but at the time, I felt a little lost about Hadley in general. Otherwise, a great read, but I am a little grossed out by the weretiger. I know that Sookie is very sheltered, but it does seem that her intimate encounter with Quinn is a little middle school. It also seems a little strange to me that a girl who fights for equality of vampires is taken aback by homosexuality and pansexuality. That was a complaint I had about all of her books, as so many characters seem to be bisexual, and yet, Sookie is grossed out. My other two complaints about the entire series (although I adore the books): (1) too much product placements, even inaccurately (i.e. Applebee's does not bring out a pot of coffee like IHOP does); (2) why does a sexy woman like Sookie seem to dress like an unfashionable old lady? I read the clothes descriptions and I laugh. These books aren't that old. Those clothes were not in fashion then either. If you think I'm being too harsh about those comments, open the book on any page and see if you don't find a product name. Is she getting money or was there a list of allowed products to name given to her by her publisher? Still a must read!!!!
4 stars Nov 03, 2009 Definitely Dead is the sixth in the series. Sookie is being wooed by Quinn, the sexy were that was the referee at the Were packmaster challenge in book 5.
This book refers to the death of Sookie's cousin Hadley, a New Orleans vampire. It appears that the story played out in a book of Sookie short-stories. Book 6 appears to pick up where that left off. I would have like a little more background at the beginning but Harris does give us the details as the book plays out.
Sookie is summoned by the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, to clean out Hadley's apartment and help her as she has married the Vampire King of Arkansas. The Queen and Hadley were lovers, but the Queen is marrying for political purposes. Sookie meets Hadley's landlord, Amelia, a witch. Sookie has been accompanied to New Orleans by Vampire Eric and Bill. Her new boyfriend Quinn is also in New Orleans, concerned as he and Sookie have been attacked twice together.
Sookie learn more about her family history and perhaps why she is so drawn to the supernatural community. She also learns a secret about Bill, that breaks her heart and may put Bill out of the running for Sookie's affections forever.
This was another great Sookie book, though confusing at first, with the missing details. Sookie gets stronger with every book, not the innocent girl that always needed saving at the beginning of the series. Sookie is indispensable to the supernatural community and she is quick to solve problems and help save the day. I also love that we meet witches again in this installment.
my rating 4/5
Definitely my favorite Oct 26, 2009 Loved this book..from start to finish I loved it.
Basically what we get her is two fold. Sookie's cousin Hadley has died (really, truly dead..she's a vamp after all you see..or was a vamp) six weeks earlier under mysterious circumstances and has to get to New Orleans in order to clear up the estate. While there she also has to meet up with the Queen vamp of New Orleans because Hadley just happened to be the Queen's lover.
Of course nothing is ever just cut and dry with Sookie's life, especially when vamps are concerned so lots of hijinks and mysteries abound. All of it fun!
There are some appearances from previous characters, some older, some newer. Eric and Quinn being two of the previous characters. In fact, Quinn is in alot of this book and makes an interesting new relationship interest/potential boyfriend for Sookie which should prove pretty fun reading as it develops in later novels. Amelia, Hadley's old land lord is also a great addition to the already colorful cast. She's a witch, you see. A very good one and one Sookie takes to immediately. I look forward to reading more of her later in the series as well.
Some very VERY interesting developments go down insofar as Sookie's previous love life. I won't spoil it but I'll say it's a big twist that I didn't see coming.
There's not a whole lot of Bill in this book and I'm glad for that. I always found him brooding and, quite frankly, overly boring and moody. I'm pretty happy that they ended their relationship several books ago.
Now, the only thing that seemed a little confusing was how Hadley's death was surrounded. It seems to have happened between this book and the previous one. I may be wrong, but I do think that there have been some Sookie short stories so maybe it was developed in one of those? I just felt that I missed a book (even though I haven't) because Hadley's death has already happened and the circumstances of which have already resulted in a previous meeting between sookie and the Queen. It's summarized well enough in this book, but it seems like that's an adventure in and of itself that would have made for some fun reading as well. I'll have to see if I can find those short stories.
As usual, the dialogue's witty, the characters are fun and the story is imaginative and entertaining. SUCH a breath of fresh air when reading overly prolonged and dragged out, spiraling downwards out of control series in the same genre (*cough* Anita Blake *cough*)
Definetly Dead Oct 02, 2009 I love this series. Its totally addictive. The book was in good condition and arrived quickly. No complaints here!
Cant get enought of Charlaine Harris Sep 13, 2009 She's captavating. You wont be disappointed reading everything she has written. Ms. Harris adds what Stephanie Meyer leaves out.
