Were-politics Must Read Nov 18, 2009 This is such a great surprise from Charlaine. I really loved that she just doesn't stay on one theme (vampires), but instead goes all over the supernatural realm and in depth. It is so interesting to read about the secret inner workings of weres, the term for what people know as werewolves. Jason has a surprise fate, and unfortunately, Eric is somewhat absent for most of this book, which is sad after he was all in the fourth book, but understandable.
Dead Weight Nov 16, 2009 Okay, I give Charlaine Harris props for the last four Sookie Stackhouse books, but this one, not so much. Dead as a Doornail lives up to it's name, it's dead. There is very little action until more than three fourths of the book is complete. No romance, no biting, no shape shifting and no Eric for goodness sake! Sookie just sits around complaining about her lot in life. About half way through, the pace picks up and we get some action with of course Sookie's life being threatened and the were-wolf community heavily involved. For me, this book lacked the humor and insight into the characters that the previous books had. It was, shouldI say it,......boring. But Harris manages to redeem herself in the last quarter of the book with some twists, tension and a new sexy character named Quinn. Although I'm still a huge fan, this wasn't the best book in the series and wasn't as well written as the others. I do look forward to the next installment and hope that Harris brings her game.
Can't put these books down! Nov 06, 2009 I liked the True Blood series so I found the books online and ordered a few. I found that I was fascinated by the characters and story lines, even more than the series. I can't stop reading. It is such an interesting way to think about the world, and it makes you want to jump into the book. I think real life seems a little dull at the moment.
I've now bought all the rest of the Stackhouse books and some of Harris' other books which I'll save for when I am mourning the end of the Stackhouse novels. I just bought the Stackhouse books in Spanish, too, so I can brush up on my Spanish. I thought that would be fun after I read the English version through a second time.
I read all the time and I've never enjoyed a book more. I hope Harris will write a few more.
4 stars Nov 03, 2009 In the fifth installment of the Sookie Stackhouse mysteries there is a sniper on the loose who is shooting shift-shapers. Sookie, everyone's favorite telepath, is especially worried as her brother, Jason, was recently bitten by a were-panther, making him one also. He is at risk of being shot and Sookie is also concerned that the were community will think Jason is the shooter, angry at what happened to him. The police can't find a link because the are unaware that there are shape-shifters, much less that they are being shot in their animal form.
Add to that, Sookie's house has been burned down and her boss, a shape-shifter was shot. Sookie's friend and former potential romantic interest, Alcide, a Were (were-wolf), wants Sookie present as the Were's have a ceremony to determine to next pack leader. Vampire Eric agrees to lend his club's bartender to replace Sookie's injured boss. But on one condition; Sookie has to tell Eric everything that happened between them during the period when he lost his memory. Sookie tells him, Eric is speechless.
I really enjoyed this installment as we get further into the supernatural community. This book focuses more on Sookie alone and her relationship with men take more of a back seat. Vampire Bill has only a cameo appearance.
Twilight for adults Oct 29, 2009 I absolutely recommend this series of books to any adult who also likes Twilight. The author is talented and writes with humor and in detail. You won't be able to put it down. I went through four books in just about two weeks and now have to order the final books. MUST READ!!! You won't be disappointed!!!
