Welcomed return to the vinyl format :) Sep 27, 2007
Earlier this year, the release of 'Crystal Visions...the very best of Stevie Nicks' made its way to the Top 20 of Billboard's album chart in its first week of release; at the same time, a 2 disc cd-dvd combo was released, and remained for some eight weeks in the top 10 of Billboard's music video chart.
It's a little hard to understand why the cd was also released without the DVD, with many retailers stocking more copies of the single disc edition, when clearly anyone interested in Nicks would have to purchase the cd-dvd combo.
The fans of Stevie Nicks steadily and rapidly saw "Crystal Visions...the very best of Stevie Nicks' drop off of the Billboard Hot 200 entirely, while the 2 disc edition remained much longer on the 'Billboard Music Video' charts, so it's all been pretty confusing to track exactly what kind of success 'Crystal Visions...the very best of Stevie Nicks' definitively has had.
A couple of months ago; for the die-hard collectors; one assumes, Reprise Records decided to release this 2 LP album, with emphasis on the "180 Gram High Performance Vinyl, Half-Speed Mastering and Plating & Pressing at R.T.I." That all sounds impressive for the vinyl expert- As for the Nicks collectors, we were pleased it's a gatefold LP that includes a stunning 1997 Harpers Bazaar magazine photo and some other large shots of her from the years gone by. Shallow as it sounds, i'd trade the' half-speed mastering' and whatnot for the 2 actual record sleeves not to be....thud...plain-white sleeves!
Stevie sounds great on her Led Zep cover of 'Rock And Roll' recorded live and clocking in at 4:03 (unfortunately, the 'bridge' of this song with no Nicks vocals goes on for too long, the song needed more Stevie Nicks on it!)
The final track on this collection is a 9:12 version of 'Edge of 17' also recorded live, and featuring The Melbourne Symphony; it's a dramatic, rocking tour-de-force from Nicks, to be sure.
Her original 'Bella Donna' 5:29 version of 'Edge of 17' is the opening song of the album; bookended with the Melbourne Symphony version as the final, and 16th, track on 'Crystal Visions'--
(in between: I Can't Wait, Sorcerer, If Anyone Falls In Love, Stop Draggin My Heart Around, Silver Springs, a Dreams remix, a live Rhiannon, Rooms On Fire, Talk To Me, a new recording of Landslide which also features The Melbourne Symphony, Stand Back, Planets of The Universe, Rock And Roll, live, and Leather and Lace).
So, its a very satisfying collection of some of the very best of Stevie Nicks. The version to absolutely buy is the CD-DVD combo. And for the 'gypsies that remain' (collecting any and all Stevie Nicks product to be found) this vinyl version is indeed a nice throwback to the old days- except, once again, never were any of Nicks actual records housed inside of a PLAIN WHITE SLEEVE.... grrr...
So, 4 stars, not 5....
