Ok, we've seen the MOB story before... Nov 04, 2009 I am usually the first person to love a mystery or a Mob story, but this is textbook.
I was intrigued by the title and the jacket of the book, but by the 4th chapter or so, it was the same ole-same ole. I was getting kind of tired of the "I'm with the MOB, don't you wish you were" attitude and the "I can't get over the MOB attitude" of the book. I realize that the people who really go through this are seriously emotionally disturbed, but we're not interested as readers.
We want to see the insides of the MOB. That's interesting. I like when I find out what happens to the people that he got so attached to. It's human interest. Please do more of that and less of the play-by-play of the MOB interactions.
Liked the book. Just some suggestions for making it better in a future release.

a real version of "The Departed" with a happy ending. Sep 25, 2009 Reading Bobby's book was riveting. Quite honestly, if the source had been made anonymous, it would have been too good of a book to be true. Instead, what we get is hard, no nonsense, mob life history. There's nothing I can say here without spoiling the book, but if you liked "The Departed", you'll love this book. One part I enjoyed the most was the story about a brief run-in at an NBA game that Delaney was refereeing. He recognized the old acquaintance as one that went into the witness relocation program, and there the guy was, 20+ years later, sitting in front row seats, in a nationally televised NBA game. Stories like that brought a smile to my face, and are used as breaks to soften the tense undercover work described in the rest of the book.

Bob Delaney's "Covert" Sep 07, 2009 The first part of "Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob" is an incredible account of NBA Ref Bob Delaney's life as an undercover state trooper living the life as a wise guy in New Jersey. It was unbelievable, at times poignant and definitely suspenseful. The story transitions to Trooper Delaney's exit from "The Life", his feelings of guilt and betrayal, and how he deals with the specter of violence & retribution that he faces as a public figure. Intriguing. Recommended read.

Fascinating Page-turner; Bob Delaney is a true role model Feb 23, 2009 Although I haven't seen Bob Delaney in 40 years, I have known him since 1965 when we started high school together. As the star athlete in the school, he was a source of pride for us due to his skills on the basketball court, taking our new, obscure little school to the state championships. This book brought back many fond memories of those days, and his subsequent years in law enforcement makes me even prouder to know him. The word "hero" tends to get bandied about all too often these days, but Bob is the classical, textbook definition of a hero. He put is life on the line to protect the rest of us from some really bad people, and I for one am grateful. It is truly an amazing story and it's difficult to put this book down. I am gratified that Bob now has his dream job (he has certainly earned it through his extraordinary determination and superb skills.) This story is a "must read."
