Very Enjoyable, One Of The Best Halo Novels Oct 12, 2009 I really enjoyed Contact Harvest. The story is interesting and well developed. The characters are well developed and empathetic, and by the end I was cheering on the small band of heroes striving believably against extremely long odds. Plus, it centers around Sgt. Johnson, whom I particularly like in the games :). There is only one goofy bit right at the very end (you'll know it right away when you see it), but it doesn't spoil anything.
Halo book series Oct 03, 2009 I'm a very avid fan of the Halo series, both the games and books. This book gives more insight in the background of some of the things and characters one sees unfold in the Halo games. It's a must for the fans, but the general science fiction reader might like it as well. Minor spelling errors aside, it is well written and will not disapoint you. The books sure gave my Halo gaming experience a whole new perspective and impuls with the knowledge I accummulated from the books, in a very positive way!
C'mon, It's Halo! Sep 09, 2009 Listen, if you're a fan of Halo, you are. If you're not you're not. So, Simply put, if you have played the games, you'll love the books. If you haven't played the games and Sci-Fi isn't your bag, don't bother. If you have heard a little bit about Halo but would like to know more... then you're only hurting yourself by NOT buying the books. My husband has been reading these for years and asks for the newest ones at every Christmas, Birthday, or Anniversary. Great, interesting books. They are better if you've played the games or plan on playing them.
Into the depth of Avery's mind Sep 03, 2009 Have you ever played the Halo games and felt that there was more to Sgt. Avery Johnson that what he was letting on? Well, there is, actually a lot more. This story does not only explore the Sargeant's past and personal feelings, but also the first contact between humanity and the Convenant. Halo 3's motto was "finish the fight!", this book motto should've been "Start the fight!".
It's an amazing books that apeals to both hardcore Halo fans, as well as science fiction fans. Being a bit of both I must say I loved it and I fully recommend it.
Disappointing... Jul 29, 2009 Well, as a Halo fan (books and games) I had hoped that this would be as good as Nylund's Halo fiction... but it wasn't. Usually I finish a 300-700 page book in about 7 hours, but because Contact Harvest was so BORING, it took me a few days. the plot is interesting, but poorly written(most of the novel was devoted to politics, not cool for a Halo book). I mean, it sounds great, the first meeting of Humans and the Covenant, the first battle of the war, and a bit of a back story of Sergent Johnson, but unlike Halo: Fall of Reach, the Flood, First Strike, and Ghost's of Onyx, this book had no engaging characters or any real twists of the plot, and nothing written in Alien perspective.
The basic plot goes like this: a Kig-Yar(Jackal) ship encounters a Human cargo ship bound to Harvest and murder the Human Captain. Humans send a ship to investigate, find the Aliens and there is a small space battle. Later, the Covenant send a few ships filled with Brutes and Grunts to Harvest to meet the Humans(hence the name "Contact Harvest"). After a mutual misreading of intentions, the Aliens attack, and. . .I'm not gonna tell you the end!
That's really all you need to know, so my advice is to read the book(just to be done with it), but don't buy it.
Overall: 4.5/10, fans of the series should read it, but it's not a great book.
