 awesome bit of metalcore Nov 22, 2009
August Burns Red is not your typical metalcore band. it sounds also like a melodic death metal band too. it is easy to imagine an MDM band such as In Flames or At The Gates converting to Christianity. this band, while having melodic elements to its sound, does not sound poppy. as a matter of fact, I have never heard any poppy metalcore band yet. as with all metalcore bands, secular and Christian, the songs are short. in the time it took me to write this review, I have heard 3 songs. this band has a unique name. one of the band members had an ex-girlfriend named August and she burned his Irish Setter named Redd, or something like that. however, this band, like many of the metalcore bands I have listened to, doesn't talk about ended relationships. August Burns Red praises the name of Jesus. song no.5, entitled "Marianas Trench", sounds almost like "My Curse" by Killswitch Engage in its instrumental approach. you owe it to yourself to spin this in your CD player. you will not be disappointed.

This band is your average " "core (put correct term in quotations) band, I found myself comparing this album to other metal acts so I gave this a 4. Great work though, I really enjoyed this band and what they had to offer.

This album is a masterpiece. Whereas Messengers (Another amazing album) had about 50,000 breakdowns per song, this album adds way more variety... in a good way. Many people who hated Messengers loved this album! The intro to Marianas Trench is a perfect example, a simple tune that could work fine in any song, not just a "hardcore" song. Greiner's drumming is dramatically improved as well, with more technical beats, especially concerning the bass.
Some negative aspects... actually just one negative aspect: The album is slow at points; it lacks the constant intensity that Messengers provided.
Overall, August Burns Red is my favorite band, by far. Get this album. And get Messengers, too, it's simply incredible.

From the looks of it, I'm going to get a lot of heat for this. In fact, I wasn't going to write a review until I saw how many reviews basically said things from one end of the spectrum without addressing the flaws. Yes, this album is, in fact, flawed. Before dismissing my review as ludicrous because I didn't roll with the back and slap a perfect 5 on the album, just hear me out.
When speaking of August Burns Red, most people talk about how technically masterful they are. They speak of the talent of each individual within the group. I wholeheartedly agree. I think this is one of the most talented young bands out there right now. So what's the problem with this album? I'll be frank, it's boring.
Thrill Seeker is one of my favorite albums of all time. Do you know why? It's because the entire album was wonderfully written, filled with catchy hooks and amazing riffs. Breakdowns were used to complement the songs rather then drive the songs. I must say, breakdowns should not drive any song. That's what makes a song boring. That is the problem I had with Messengers. That album wasn't a showcase of beautifully written music that tells you the band is talented in both song writing and musicianship. No. That album was a showcase of talent in it's entirety. That's not to say the album was terrible, but it was no Thrill Seeker.
Now we get to Constellations. As I said before...it's boring. I'm all for being patient with music, but honestly, this isn't anything I haven't heard before with Messengers in the first place. Are there catchy riffs and great melodies, sure. Hey, the first minute or so of Thirty and Seven is pretty cool. But guess what happens after the minute. That's right, 3 minutes of pointless theatrics more concerned with showing raw ability than fantastic song structure.
I make it sound like it's the worst album in the world, I know. But that's only to inform you. If I went over what was good with this album, I would only be repeating what the other reviewers have been raving about. Let me just make something clear. Having talent is only half the battle. A great album needs both masterful song writing and great talent to execute it. So, that being said, this is not a great album. This is at best, a decent album. And that's if you get through the whole thing. I find myself flipping through other artists when trying to get through this album, and that's not a good sign.
So no, forgive me for not automatically slapping a perfect on this album because it's August Burns Red and they're super talented. I love these guys, and I think they're great musicians. But being as unbiased as I can be, this isn't a spectacular outing by any means. But then again, this is just my opinion. I strongly recommend you listen to album because it does have it's moments.
So in short, song writing = first; talent = second. I expect these guys to blow me away next time, but this time, I don't think so. If it were up to me, I would just take the breakdowns out of all the songs because it's been done to death and I'd want something unique. But then again, the live crowd probably wouldn't approve. Still, I wouldn't be moshing to that by myself in my room.
