Description:

With Can't Stay Away, his first album since his self-imposed retirement, X-rated rapper Too Short (a.k.a. Todd Shaw) picks up where he left off with his last release, 1996's Gettin' It. Born in Los Angeles, raised in Oakland, and now living in Atlanta, Too Short is famous for yowling "biiitch" with a distinct sneer, and he's changed little over the years. The fellatio-obsessed rapper still knows how to lay down a slow, funky groove, but his lyrics are nothing short of offensive. With the exception of self-reflexive songs like "Divide and Conquer" and "Still Strugglin'," Short keeps to the usual playa themes, boasting about his sexual prowess ("Don't Stop Rappin'") and complaining about the girls who don't got back ("Invasion of the Flat Booty Bitches"). Cameos by Eightball and MJG, Jay-Z, Shabba Ranks, Daz, Scarface, and Lil' Kim suggest that a short-lived hiatus hasn't hurt Too Short's popularity. --Jeff Niesel

1Not one single good song - DO NOT BUY THIS!  Dec 23, 2008
Absolutely hated this. Not one good song, and an utter waste of time and money. Stick with the older Too Short cds (nothing past 1995).

2Are We All Listening to the Same Album Here?  Aug 20, 2007
First off, a little history lesson on this album. When 'Can't Stay Away' was originally supposed to come out (in 1998) it was a standard 17 track album. However, Too $hort reworked this album for commercial purposes, shaved seven (eight if you count a bonus song) tracks off the album, and then finally released it June 1999. Here was the original intended track listing before Too $hort made this a poor commercial product:

1 CAN'T STAY AWAY 4:28
2 STILL STRUGGLIN' FEAT HORACE BROWN -
3 DON'T STOP RAPPIN FEAT. EIGHTBALL & MJG 5:51
4 HERE WE GO FEAT. JAY-Z, SHABBA RANKS (JERMAINE DUPRI REMIX) -
5 BE MY DIRTY LOVE -
6 MORE FREAKY TALES 5:08
7 YOU MIGHT GET G'EED FEAT. DAZ, E-40, SOOPA FLY 5:22
8 GOOD LIFE 3:53
9 LONGEVITY FEAT. SCARFACE 4:28
10 TELL THE FEDS FEAT. QUINT BLACK -
11 DIVIDE AND CONQUER -
12 HOW DOES IT FEEL FEAT. DWAYNE WIGGINS -
13 WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GROUPIES FEAT. B-LEGIT 5:35
14 WHERE THEY AT - FEAT.CAPTAIN SAVE-A-HO -
15 INVASION OF THE FLAT BOOTY ****** 4:26
16 CAN'T STAY AWAY (OUTRO) 1:32
17 CALL ME FEAT. LIL KIM (BONUS TRACK)

As you can see, the album has changed much since then. This version is divided into three different parts:

Part 1 - Tracks: 1-12 (main album)
Part 2 - Track: 13 (bonus track)
Part 3 - Tracks: 14-17 (introducing new artists on Too $Hort's label)

Despite the glowing reviews for this album, 'Can't Stay Away' is a very poor release from Short Dog. Most of it is very dull and heavily commercial sounding. Too $hort invented a sound on previous albums, but on this one he stoops down to a generic sound that anyone could have produced.

Not all of it is horrible. 'Can't Stay Away' is a nice introduction, and 'Don't Stop Rappin'' is the best track on this album. It features southern legends Eightball and M.J.G. 'Here We Go' (featuring Jay-Z) is an above-average track that stands out here only because most of this album is garbage. 'Good Life', I believe was possibly a single (I could have sworn I heard it back in 99)and is a pretty good track. 'What Happend to the Groupies' is another okay track, though the Short Dogg Records portion contains an excellent track called 'Nation Riders'.

The rest of the album, unfortunately, is pretty dull, boring, and disappointing, especially compared to Short Dog's albums of the past. More of a commercial product/advertisement than a work of art, 'Can't Stay Away' is one of Short Dog's weakest albums and his most overrated work.

2You better stay away from this album!  Aug 13, 2007
There is something fishy about this album. Its sounds like something Too Short threw together just to keep his name relevant. The Good: Cant Stay Away is a good opener and is vintage Too Short. Dont Stop Rappin with EightBall & MJG is the best song on the album and is better than that original version on the bonus Suave House disc on Eightball's Lost. Here We Go with Jermaine Dupri and Jay-z is great lyrically but the beat is ehhh. More Freaky Tales and Invasion Of The Flat Booty B****es is Too Short at his storytelling best. Honorable mentions: Nation Riders , Good Life and Its About That Money(Puffy's boring a$$ could have been left out you know). The Bad: What Happened To The Groupies with B-Legit, Aint No B****es and You Might Get G'eed with Daz, Supafly and E-40 are dull as s***! How Does It Feel is just as tiresome. The Ugly: Longevity with Big Mike and Scarface is hot garbage and how such a weak song got Yukmouth to diss all three is beyond me. Dishonorable Mentions: In the Studio(nice beat doodoo record), Dont Trust Her(YAWN!) and G-2000(double YAWN). Bottom Line: Too Short's Cant Stay Away is the tipoff that Too Short wasnt going to be the same. The songs were dull and its just sounded like he was busy trying to put his homeboys(who suck!)out.

3Can't Stay Away  Sep 30, 2006
Overall if you're a fan of $hort you'll probably be into this. The production is just as promising here as other records. My problem w/this is all the GUESTS. Way too many guests artists and the whole time I'm wantin $hort to step up to the MIC and kick his Shh... & sometimes it doesn't even happen. A better rating would be 3 and half because like I said earlier the production is solid.
