A little Texas / a heavy dose of Nashville Aug 20, 2009 For all those who think Texas fans are stubborn or not open to the Nashville sound, let me state that I am not from Texas and have a healthy appreciation for Nashville country. However, some artists really can do the Nashville country sound very well (Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw). Others find success carving out their own sound and it still gets played on Nashville country stations because it is too good to not play (Willie Nelson, George Strait, Alan Jackson). However, there are those artists that get caught in the crossfire of trying to satisfy the Nashville record label, but also trying to stay true to their roots. I feel like Pat Green is one of those artists.
"Cannonball" continues on the "Wave on Wave" departure away from his unique country sound. It's not about the subject matter of songs, it's about the way he sings them. You can clearly hear in his voice the songs he has conviction in (Cannonball, Way Back Texas, Dixie Lullaby, Feels Just Like It Should), and the other songs that just don't seem to fit his style or sound (Won't Let Love, Trying to Find It). Unfortunately, even some of the songs Pat has co-writing credits seem off, perhaps because they were over-produced to be radio-friendly.
If you are going to give this album 5 stars in a rating, I would ask why. Listen to Pat Green's previous work. It was not all about beer drinking and crazy college days. Sure, it had a edge of Texas pride to it, but listen to George Strait, so does his music and he hasn't had a problem selling records. This is not an evolution of Pat's sound, this is big record labels getting in the way of an artist putting out albums that truly are representative of that artist's sound. I don't think Pat has sold out, as others claim. I just think when it comes to studio work, there are too many execs in his ear telling him what they feel is acceptable for his records. Trust me, when you see Pat Green in concert, you know the type of artist he is. His concerts reflect that gritty rockin' country sound that made him huge in Texas and excited non-Texans when they heard his music. He was a refreshing departure from the packaged Nashville sound, and still is live, but unfortunately his records don't reflect that.
Hoped for better Mar 19, 2009 I agree with many on this, Pat, please take a long hard look at what got you here...your fans. You had a good sound and good lyrics. I'm not expecting songs about drinking beer on every CD but the sound needs to stay the same...ish (no I do not mean exactly the same, just more like Three Days or Lucky Ones). Like others said, take your lessons from Jimmy Buffet - he sells out large stadiums and has very loyal fans without giving into the "contrived" or "over-produced" sounds. I don't mean to be too critical here, many artists fall into this path. Just, please, your long time fans (young and young at heart) want the "old" Pat back! I don't feel as connected to the music on this CD as I do to Three Days, Lucky Ones, etc.
Great Album! Aug 10, 2008 I first heard Pat Green on the radio when his song "Dixie lullaby" was playing and I was impressed. After that I had to buy his music, so now I own almost all of his CD's. This CD is great all the way through, I definitely recommend this album to any Pat Green or Country music fan.
Love it Oct 26, 2007 People may say this CD is not "classic Pat" but I still love it. Each his albums fits a certain mood and this one certainly has a place in my music rotation.
I hope that you will love it as much as I do. New to Pat? Give it a try, you never know.
Pat's grown up Oct 24, 2007 Pat's growing older, and so is his music. I love his older music, but I also enjoy his music today, expecially Cannonball. We can't always be kids and Canonball reflects that. For example, "Way Back Texas" speaks to those of us who enjoy remembering our "wilder" days, but are happy to have moved on to the next phase. Pat's still Pat and this CD proves it. Excellent buy.
