Pleasantly surprised Sep 07, 2009 I've recently become a Hornsby fan, but was a little nervous picking this one up. I like some Jazz, but I find much of it to be rote and even annoying; especially the gratuitous usage of the tenor sax... bleh. Anyway, in short I was pleasantly surprised by this jem of an album. This music represents what I *do* like about jazz: interesting key changes; clever, unpredictable twists; virtuosic piano improvisation.
As with much of Hornsby's work, this may not be for the average pop listener. Furthermore, if you have a strict idea of what Jazz should sound like, you might be somewhat offended. On the other hand, if you like rich music and have an open mind, this album is worth every penny. I dig it...
One more thing, the samples don't do justice to this music because most of the songs traverse through several modes. If you aren't sure about this album, I would recommend downloading a couple full tracks.
Well Worth a Listen Jul 07, 2009 Pianist/singer/songwriter Bruce Hornsby has always shown an interest in jazz, but this is his first out-and-out jazz recording. Joined by veteran drummer Jack DeJohnette, who really shines throughout this recording, and (relatively) young bassist Christian McBride, who if nothing else brings plenty of energy to this Camp Meeting, Jarrett tackles both straight jazz compositions (e.g., Ornette Coleman's "Questions and Answers," Miles Davis's `Solar," Keith Jarrett's "Death and the Flower," John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser") and some compositions of his own, which are plenty of fun in this context.
The end result, although not in the same league as Keith Jarrett's or even Mike Longo's trios, is certainly enjoyable and well worth giving a listen. Indeed, for someone not accustomed to jazz, this might be an excellent recording to sample to see what jazz is all about. It can be enjoyed in its own right, but can also serve as a bridge to further musical exploration. Bruce Hornsby is a wonderful musician; let's hope he continues to bring his talent and vision to both rock and jazz--or bluegrass and anything else he wants to try.

Bruce Hornsby in name only Jun 05, 2008 Love Bruce Hornsby but I should have read up on this before buying. It is a straight Jazz instrumental and not to my liking
Strong, stright-up jazz Mar 20, 2008 Hornsby's playing here reminds me of the young Brubeck -- strong phrasing, clean rhythm, clear ideas. This is not fusion or pop -- it's straight-up jazz.
