FANTASTIC Mar 18, 2010 A MOVIE IS A MOVIE...BEYONCE AS ETTA JAMES IS AMAZING...AS WELL OTHERS WERE VERY, VERY GOOD...FACT OR FICTION??????????????? MOST MOVIES A BIT OF BOTH..SO GET A GRIP AND ENJOY THE MOVIE FOR THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
disapointed Mar 15, 2010 I was delighted with the early arrival then schedule of this DVD. However I didn't enjoy it at all. I was hoping to here the original songs of Etta James and the acting wasn't that good either, which made for a boring movie.
Makes You a Part of the Blues Mar 01, 2010 Okay, so Darnell Martin and Company took some liberties with this movie. That's all right by me, because they took some history and turned it into pure entertainment and that's what movies are all about, taking you out of your life and putting you in the story. And if they educate too, so much the better. And if the soundtrack is to beat the band, then you really have something.
The last movie based on a true story that moved me like this was Pride of the Yankees. They took some liberties with Lou Gehrig's story too, but how accurate can you be in only a couple hours. They gotta hit the high points, they gotta make you care and they gotta be true to the real life people they're portraying. Ms. Martin does all that here. I'm predicting we won't be seeing her directing much TV anymore. This movie puts Darnell Martin right up there with Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood & Steven Spielberg. As far as film directors go, she is a true star.
My dad owned Saturn Records in L.A. and I grew up listening to Muddy Waters, Etta James and later Aretha. True we sold a lot of Rock and The Beatles, Stones and Bob Dylan were on my musical plate as well, but I always new where Rock came from, but there is a whole couple generations out there now who don't have a clue. Thanks to Ms. Martin, now they do.
I've been in my share of recording studios, was there when James Brown cut "I'm Black and I'm Proud" and from my experience, this movie nails the recording scenes. Well, maybe they're a bit more dramatic than the real thing, but other than that Ms. Martin puts you right in the studio, shows you how it really was. She makes you a part of the blues and you can't praise a director any higher than that.
The Blues and real heartache Feb 21, 2010 If you are a fan of old-school R&B like me, you will fall in love with this movie. If I want to I can sit down and pick its flaws. But the twang of the blues guitar, the heart wrenching vocals and the aura of that era just washes it all away.
We believe it when Jeffrey Wright makes his guitar bleed as Muddy Waters, we sway as Columbus Short croons "My Babe" as Little Walter and we feel it when Beyonce's (her best movie performance to date) voice aches as she renders "All I could do is cry" as Etta James.
Yes, the history is flaky. The editing needs some work. But when you have a tune in your ears and a song in your heart, imperfections just enhances beauty. That is where "Cadillac Records" succeeds where many others fail.
Jeffrey Wright does it again Feb 08, 2010 Jeffrey Wright is such an underexposed talent. This brother can ACT!!
I would like to see him in more roles. He should have had 3 Oscars by now.
