Totally enjoyable modern rock album Sep 03, 2009 I'm not a huge fan of the stuff that gets played on mainstream rock radio these days, since bands like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman just don't do anything for me. Still, every now and again I run across a new band that stands out a bit from the Staind-wannabe crowd. Burn Halo is one of those bands.
Burn Halo was formed by Jonathan Hart of Eighteen Visions and features members of Jane's Addiction and Nickelback - all of which would serve as a warning for me to steer clear of the album, but once I heard album opener "Dirty Little Girl" I knew I had to give the band's 2009 self-titled debut a try. The fact is, it's hard to resist these catchy, melodic rock anthems, even if they do sound like the soundtrack for a dozen Mountain Dew commercials. You've got great melodic guitar hooks, plenty of swagger, and a back-to-basics pure rock & roll attitude that bring to mind bands like AC/DC and the Cult, which is never a bad thing. I wish the band had gone a little further into old school territory, but I suppose at that point they'd lose out on airplay and WWE theme music opportunities.
I'm obviously not as thrilled by Burn Halo as some of the other reviewers here, but I will admit it's a better than average mainstream rock record, and way more interesting than most of the nu-rock stuff I'm used to hearing on the radio these days. You'll probably like the album more if you get into the whole Nickelback sound, but even of you don't you might be pleasantly surprised by this one.

This album is pure modern-era rock with plenty of heavy riffs Sep 03, 2009 The Good
"Dirty Little Girl" is dominated by meaty guitar riffs and gritty vocals. Driving guitars set the steady pace for "Save Me." Vocalist James Hart delivers an empowering performance here. The chorus hook is sure to draw you in. "Here With Me" is a little more glossy than the tracks that preceded it. It still has that rock edge, but is clearly a song set up for the radio. Hart shows his vocal diversity here. "So Addicted" sound like it was plucked right from the Alice in Chains or Stone Temple Pilots catalog. "Saloon Song" is undeniably catchy, and tells the tale of a bar hook up that lead to a long love affair. Burn Halo comes with all barrels blazing on "Our House." "Falling Faster" is a predominately acoustic ballad with an over-the-top chorus. "Anejo" brings the energy level back up.
The Bad
Nothing notable
The Verdict
Vocalist James Hart said he wanted to go out there and create a straight-up rock record with commercial appeal. Well, Hart hits the nail on the head with Burn Halo's debut. This album is pure modern-era rock with plenty of heavy riffs and melodic vocals. Burn Halo reminds me the current rock sound being put forth by Hinder or Rev Theory. Halo is in great company indeed.

Burn Halo - Makes me like music again!!! Aug 14, 2009 I am not one to leave reviews on things, but I love this CD - I have not said that in a long time **almost 20 years (with few exceptions AIC, Buckcherry, etc) I really hope this band gets more exposure. Anyone who has not listened to this is really missing out - Thank You Burn Halo :)
