    5The Best of Bruce  Jun 01, 2010
Although I was not a fan of Bruce Springsteen in his heyday, I discovered his music on PBS. This CD is well worth listening and re-listening to. Highly recommend!

5And, still, the cover is puzzling  May 19, 2010
I consider a CD worth the purchase when I enjoy at least two of the tracks. With cuts 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10, the money is well-spent. It is the cover (front and back) which puzzles me. Are the subject's hands in his tight pockets for unknown reasons, or is he peeing? What were the package producers and photographers thinking? I mean, if I wanted to see that sort of thing, I would watch Hollywood news on the television. Oh, well.... You don't have to look at the cover to listen to the music.

4Good collection, but is it for casual fans or die-hards?  May 19, 2010
'Greatest Hits' was Springsteen's first hits collection, released in the mid 90's and covering his most commercially successful period. It contains most of his big hits and radio favourites from the mid-70's to the early 90's, plus a couple of new and re-released songs. It's a pretty good collection, but I feel the album is not quite sure what it wants to be. Is it supposed to appeal to the very casual fan who only wants the big hits, or to the die-hards looking for fan favourites and rare tracks? While the album does contain most of what everyone will want to hear, I was a bit surprised at a few of the omissions, as well as one or two of the inclusions.

Inevitably the collection is dominated by the commercially successful singles: 'Born To Run', 'The River', 'Hungry Heart', 'Born In The USA', 'Dancing In The Dark', 'My Hometown', 'Glory Days', 'Brilliant Disguise', 'Streets Of Philadelphia'. No arguing with these tracks, as they are some of the best examples of Springsteen's ability to tell personal stories within a variety of pop/rock formats. This does mean that some of his darker, less accessible albums ('Darkness...', 'Nebraska') are sparsely represented, and it's a pity that none of the stuff from his first two albums made it. His version of 'Blinded By The Light' would have been a great inclusion. It's also surprising that a couple of pretty big hits miss out as well....I'd have thought 'Tunnel Of Love', 'Cover Me' and 'I'm On Fire' would get a place on the album.

Instead, the album provides some fodder for die-hard fans by including four new songs. 'Secret Garden' and 'Blood Brothers' are fairly subdued, acoustic songs in the mould of his 90's work, whereas 'This Hard Land' and 'Murder Incorporated' were 'Born In The USA' holdovers, and they sound like it. The latter in particular has apparently become a cult fan favourite, so it's fair enough to include that one. But I'm not sure the album needed FOUR new songs, especially considering the more well-known songs that are missing. If you're going to include that many new tracks, you might as well go the whole way and make a double album specifically targeted at the dedicated fans (i.e. 'The Essential Bruce Springsteen'). This album seems more designed for casual fans, so it was perhaps a mistake for these new songs to elbow out actual hits.

Perhaps the album is just a victim of Springsteen's own success. He had so many big hits and memorable songs that even a generous 18-track collection like this one can't quite do justice to every aspect of his career. Still, it's a pretty good collection that covers two decades of Springsteen's career, and despite its flaws it does still contain a hell of a lot of great music.

    5Springsteen's first compilation album  May 03, 2010
Greatest Hits is Springsteen's first compilation album. All but four songs are singles and popular songs from his past albums. This is one of my favorite Springsteen albums, because it has many of his singles and popular songs and because it has previously unreleased songs. If you're a die-hard Springsteen fan, I recommend buying this. If not, it's up to you.

    5The BOSS  Mar 02, 2010
My husband and I just loved this album. All the best songs were on it. We are children of the 60's, but Bruce really was fantastic.
