Description:

Family physician, research psychologist, and acclaimed author of Why Gender Matters, Leonard Sax reveals the truth about what's driving the decline of American boys--and what parents can do about it.

Something scary is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, they are less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere twenty years ago. As for young men, it turns out the film Failure to Launch is not far from the truth. Fully one-third of men ages 22-34 are still living at home with their parents--about a 100 percent increase in the past twenty years. Boys nationwide are increasingly dropping out of school; fewer are going to college; and for the first time in American history, women are outnumbering men at undergraduate institutions three to two.

Parents, teachers, and mental health professionals are worried about boys. But until now, no one has come up with good reasons for their decline--and, more important, with workable solutions to reverse this troubling trend. Now, family physician and research psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on his vast clinical experience to propose an entirely original view of why boys and young men are failing in school and at home. He argues that a combination of social, cultural, and biological factors is creating an environment that is literally toxic to boys, ranging from environmental estrogens to the over-prescription of ADHD drugs. And he presents practical solutions--from new ways of controlling boys' use of video games, to innovative (and workable) education reforms.

5Essential Reading  Sep 30, 2009
I had already read Leonard Sax's book "Why Gender Matters". He is easy to read with important information for any parent or teacher of boys. I've been telling everyone I know about the books and hoping this will precipitate some much needed changes in public education.

4excellent read for parents of boys  Sep 28, 2009
Great book that makes you think about video gaming infuence as well as medications that make a real difference in development.

5Good Start on Complex Subject  Aug 29, 2009
This book is a great start on a complex subject of boys/men. I'm kind of undecided on the ADHD stuff as yet, but do feel they overmedicate it and the kids aren't getting outside enough. In particular, I'm glad the videogaming was mentioned, I believe it creates less study time, and a propensity toward addictive behaviors later in life in men - alcoholism/food/video gaming. I feel that too often the tv and video games are used to babysit.

5A must read for every parent.  Aug 02, 2009
Another eye-opening offering by the author of "Why Gender Matters", this book explains what exactly has happened to the males in our society and will continue to happen if we don't wake up and make some major changes.

5Young males in peril. . .  Jul 24, 2009
Boys Adrift by Leonard Sax is a must read for anyone who deals with kids. This includes parents, teachers, physicians, coaches, school boards, athletic leagues--you get the picture. Our society has perilously marginalized what science is showing to be DNA-level male inclinations such as competition, risk-taking, and general physicality. Sax's writing is both accessible and solidly founded.

I am a teacher. I've spent some 20 years in the company of adolescents in classrooms. What Sax says is frighteningly accurate. We need to expand our ability to nurture boys (and girls) in ways that are effective for maximizing their growth and potential. Youngsters have enormous gifts to give us if, on their behalf, we use every tool in our box and every insight science can provide us.

Leonard Sax has provided us a beacon.
