Brilliant! Oct 26, 2009 I have seriously listened to this hundreds of times. I just do not seem to grow tired of it. The definitive version of selfless, cold & composed. Hard to find out here in Australia though, a huge shame!

Fun to hear college arrangements of Folds' music Oct 06, 2009 Ben Folds is one of the best young American songwriters today, and it is great that he is encouraging others to follow in his footsteps. These college and university arrangements of his music are a fun listen. Varied arrangements done by various a capella groups of one man's music makes for good listening.
A new group that is doing the opposite is worth a some attention. They are a single group reinventing pieces by a wide variety of great indie songwriters. They are called Sonos and they seem to represent a new direction for a capella. If you are an a capella fan and have yet to hear them, check them out here: SonoSings
Sonos is a Los Angeles based group that was signed by Verve this past summer and they have released their first album which features reinventions of pieces by Radiohead, Bjork, Rufus Wainright, The Bird and the Bee, Bon Iver and the like. Sara Bareilles actually sings with them on her song "Gravity" on this album. They are currently touring the nation in support of the album release.
So Unexpected Sep 22, 2009 I just did a random search to see what Ben Folds has available that I haven't picked up yet. I wasn't expecting this album. At first I was skeptical; how could a series of a Capella ensemble pieces add to some of the songs on the playlist? Well, they add a new dimension I was not expecting.
'Still Fighting It', 'Fred Jones Part 2' and 'The Luckiest' are all high on my list of Ben Folds favorites. These three are also my favorites from the 16 songs on the album. In all three there is something haunting that keeps drawing me back to listen to them again and again. I think I may like these versions better than the originals.
The a cappella version of 'Jesusland' made me go back to the original to listen more closely to it.
Overall, these arrangements are worth a listen. If you're already a Ben Folds fan, you will appreciate the album. If you're not yet a fan, this group of songs may well get you interested in his greater body of work.
Some great tunes, but many exclusions and ho-hum arranging Aug 01, 2009 I was turned on to this CD for 2 reasons - 1. it was a project by Folds, and 2. it featured his tunes in a new light - vocal groups singing Folds tunes from colleges around the US. After checking out many auditions for this project on Youtube, I honestly expected the music to sound a bit more.... interesting. Most of the arrangements don't really push the envelope for creative arranging, and stick very close to the originals recorded by Folds. Many of the tunes follow the same format: One lone singer doing the melody, with the rest of the group laying down chords and/or some ostinato rhythms underneath the melody.
It was worth the purchase just to hear his tunes in a new way. However, I'd like to hear another disc with more groups included, such as the group Dischords from Michigan State University that did an arrangement of "Missing the War", and the Penn State Pennharmonics doing "Gone", etc...
Great Vocals!! Jul 17, 2009 The vocals on this album are fantastic! You can hear all the secondary parts and the blend is beautiful. I highly recommend this album for vocal music fans and also for fans of Ben Folds.
