Beautiful Ballads and Love Songs Apr 17, 2009 Tripped my lovers trigger, what else can I say without going X rated. Miles is always excellent.
The perfect anything for anytime Feb 16, 2009 I've been listening to Miles Davis since high school, which is more years than I care to count. In college, I played to death three albums: Miles Davis's and Gil Evans's Porgy And Bess, Stan Getz's Sweet Rain, and Van Cliburn's RCA recording of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Kiril Kondrashin conducting. I woke to those, I did my homework to those, I read to those, I dreamed to those, I made out to those, I spent rainy days and quiet evenings listening to those, and they shaped my adolescence. Those three albums are still among my most favorite recordings, the Davis and Getz ballads most of all.
And after listening to much more Miles Davis and Stan Getz than that, I've come to a few conclusions. One, whatever the mood you're in, there is a Miles Davis or Stan Getz cut that is just perfect for it. Two, both men really **knew** how to use their respective instruments: Miles shares top billing with Louis Armstrong as best jazz trumpeters of all time, whereas Getz was SOoooo good he was simply known in some circles as "the Sound" -- which tells you a lot. Third, if it's a ballad you want, Miles and Stan can't be beat; there are many who come close, but none who surpass in lyrical quality, emotion, technique, or just sheer WOW factor. These guys take your breath away.
This CD represents some of the best Miles Davis renditions of ballads. As such, it's the perfect intro to Miles Davis. The perfect intro to jazz. The perfect quiet Sunday morning with your coffee music. The perfect rainy-day music. The perfect late-night music. The perfect on the couch with your beloved music. The perfect getting over a breakup or commiserating music. The perfect chill-out music. The perfect lullaby.
Most of all, The Perfect Valentine. Buy this for someone you love, or just because you love jazz. It's a keeper.
