Great story + abstract art = Just OK Nov 18, 2009 Batman: Arkham Asylum is a fantastic story - Batman is forced to go through Arkham in a sick and twisted obstacle course setup by the Joker, on April Fool's day. At the same time, the book focuses on Arkham's slow decent into maddness, and parallels that decent into Batman's tenuous grip on sanity. That said, the art is very surreal and abstract, and it took me out of the story. It forced me to think about what I was looking at, but I think some of the details that the author and artist intended to portray were lost. Overall, I'd say it was good, but not great.
Messed up version of Batman Oct 17, 2009 Not exactly your typical Batman. The art is very well done, the story is rather interesting. A must read for any big Batman fans.
As dark as the dark knight gets Oct 02, 2009 If you're looking for a dark story revolving around batman, this is the graphic novel to go to. Batman is blackmailed into entering arkham asylum when Joker and some of the dark knight's other enemies take over the old, converted mansion. What follows is a mix between an uncovering of the twisted history of the asylum and batman seeking to overcome his own potential madness and some of Gotham's greatest villains. The story is told in almost surreal images that fit and enhance the dark mood perfectly.
A warning to those used to a more "normal" artistic style, arkham asylum is what would usually be referred to as very experimental. If you're looking for your average batman graphic novel/ comic, this may not be the place to go. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

Amazing, Yet . . . Sep 26, 2009 This IS an amazing artistic journey, and an enveloping storyline. However, I'm of the opinion that if a story's artistic qualities begin reducing the reader's ability to comprehend what is happening, then something needs to be done to fix that problem. Thank Merlin that the storyline is typed out in the back. It's likely that I would not have ever truly understood what was ACTUALLY happening, otherwise. I also don't think of Batman as that much of a prude either, but that might just be me.
I much enjoyed Alan Grant's Batman: The Last Arkham and found myself wishing that this story could have been more like that. Eh, no matter. It was still an enjoyable experience overall.
A truly different but wonderful graphic novel! Sep 19, 2009 A truly different graphic novel, the art is very elegant and gothic and abstract. The story is a true spin on the usual batman and joker rumble in the concrete jungle. The story is that the joker has taken over Arkham Asylum, and is holding hostages and his request is that batman come to the asylum and become a permanent resident. The novel also goes over the life of the asylum's founder Aumidaus Arkham. This is a must buy for batman fans, Graphic novel fans, and art fans. BUY IT!
