Description:

"Violence begins to mend what was broken." Boy, how he does it. Choosing not to borrow the pinky ring flash of the Underworld and but rather good old fashioned eye for eye justice, singer Randy Blythe croaks savagely though "Omerta." Backed by a healthy dose of lumbering menace, the song is sung as if by vengeance itself. Violence begetting violence is a constant on this album, both in music and word; in both personal trial and world politics. Lamb of God have show their 80's thrash roots on Ashes of the Wake by featuring solos from both Testament and Megadeth. The band plows forward taking from the new, the old, and adding their own stamp--heavy, angry, and political. --Daniel Mahon

4Pretty good  Jul 14, 2009
I struggled with wether to give this 3.5 or 4 stars. I was a little disappointed with AotW when I first got it but, after four times through, it's growing on me.

Very heavy, no argument there, and there are some pretty good songs. None of the songs really blew me away, though. There are moments with very cool riffs and grooves (not any soloing worth speaking off) but even when a song starts out solid, they sometimes peter-out towards the middle. I can't help but compare them with (early) Pantera in my own mind and I find Lamb of God lacking in some way I can't quite articulate...

Still, AotW is a pretty good disc. It's nothing you need to run out and buy right away but it's worth listening to if you have a chance to pick up a copy.

Recommended.

5One of the Greats  Mar 07, 2009
This album clearly makes the top ten of any metal head's list of all times. Laid to Rest, Omerta, Blood of the Scribe. All these songs are instant metal classics. This band ranks among the best of my time. Pantera, Metallica, Anthrax and Lamb of God. If you do not own this album, you truly are missing out and cannot declare yourself a fan of True American Metal.

5Incredible release from one of the absolute best metal bands out today!!!  Mar 03, 2009
"Ashes of the Wake" really shows Lamb of God perfecting their style of extreme metal and showcasing their maturing and excellent songwriting. Throughout this mammoth of a thrash-metal album, we get huge heavy complex guitar riffs, Randy's trademark growls and spoken-word parts, harmonized guitar lines and jaw-droppingly awesome drum work, with everything from insane double bass, razor-sharp triplets and use of every piece of the kit.
The standout songs are "Laid to Rest", "Now You've Got Something to Die For", "Omerta", and "Ashes of the Wake", although every song on this album showcases Lamb of God at the peak of their game.
This band reminds me a lot of a new-found Pantera, although with twice the technicality and still maintaining just as much intensity. So if you want a brutal, complex and catchy album that'll be in your player for a long time, definitely for go "Ashes of the Wake!".
Oh by the way, guitar gods Chris Poland and Alex Skolnick do two amazing guest guitar solos on "Ashes of the Wake", something not to miss! Thanks for the time, and peace.

5The best from LOG  Nov 13, 2008
I've been a metal fan since Kill 'em All first came out (Metallica - 1983), and more specifically primarily thrash metal. Some of my faves for reference sake:

Metallica - Kill 'em All, ...And Justice for All
Slayer - Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, Seasons in the Abyss
Sepultura - Chaos A.D., Schizophrenia
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power
Biohazard - Urban Discipline

I realize they're all older generation (but then so am I). Then I heard LOG about a year ago (Sacrament had just come out) on satellite radio and was blown away. It had a unique modern American Metal sound with hints of Slayer and Pantera. So naturally I headed to the music store to get their latest CD. But all they had was Ashes of the Wake. Lucky for me. This CD is without question LOG's masterpiece. The album is enjoyable from start to finish...not a mediocre tune on it. And the production and how it was recorded are just top notch. I've since acquired Sacrament and As the Palaces Burn, which are good, but don't compare to Ashes. Palaces has a more unrefined and lower quality production sound and Sacrament just doesn't have that addictive quality Ashes has (maybe too much bass...sounds a little muffled). The more you listen to Ashes, the more you want to hear it again. You won't go a week without listening to it through and throught at least one time.

5Don't fade on listening to the faded line  Jul 06, 2008
It's soooooooo good and violent!! Like watching a supermodel vomiting razorblades after an eating binge!! Buy it before they come to your house and kick your as s for being a wimp!
