Not their best work Sep 14, 2009 I would have given this 3.5 stars, if I could. While AtPB has it's moments, the album left me slightly disappopinted, overall. I was told that this was THE Lamb of God album to get. There were a couple of songs I really liked but most were just o.k. I had expected more intereting riff-work. The production seemed off, too; the drums and guitar sound just a touch thin and tinny. AtPB is good but Ashes of the Wake and (to a lesser extent) Wrath are better. If this is your first LOG buy, then get Ashes. Of course, if you're already a LOG fan, you'll probibly find AtPB satisfactory.
Recommended (but they have better albums out there). If you don't buy the disc, at least download track #4, "11th Hour." It's the best song on there.

The most amazing metal band of the new millennium Mar 06, 2009 This review can really apply to any of this awesome band's albums. Fist of all I might comment that they do have a somewhat odd name, which is certainly NOT reflective of the terrifying brutality of their music, and especially where some mindless souls can actually be misled. I can't forget reading a weird review somewhere by some poor idiot who picked up one of their CDs because he thought they were a 'Christian metal band'(!), but was horribly disillusioned because 'the singer sounded too angry to love Jesus...' - kind of sad yet hilarious at the same time. Anyway to get to the bottom line, which is their music, it kicks major a**!. If you like your metal done hard, heavy and brutal, this band is an ideal starting point. Definitely one of the most QUALITY American metal bands of the new millennium! I've heard about the comparisons to Pantera, whose influence I've definitely detected in their music, yet while listening further, I've also heard strong influences from every other metal genre that ever turned me on! This includes thrash metal with traces of 80's Metallica, Slayer, Exodus and others, as well as death metal reminiscent of most major brutal death metal pioneers of the 90's (Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Death etc. etc.) in addition to their own unique style of course. In other words, a mish-mash of everything good from the world of extreme metal. Vocalist Randy Blythe both screams and growls, which I consider quite unique and very well done. The guitars are meaty, sharp, ultra-distorted and just plain HEAVY. Although I would appreciate some more guitar solos, the overall structure of their sound doesn't make you miss them very much. As a long-time metal fan, I must admit that I have recently 'discovered' Lamb of God's music after which I promptly added their entire CD output to my music collection, and I'm glad that I did!. The way it looks now, these guys will definitely not let you down. Metal fans, pick up ATPB or any other of their albums with confidence, crank'em up and enjoy!
The Destroyers of Nu-Metal (4.5/5 Stars) Nov 26, 2008 Back in Summer 2001, nu-metal was the rage. Yes, there was an interest in bands like Slayer, but that was largely due to them getting exposure from hipsters who were more into fashionable pop-punk than metal. While going through articles in magazines, in between ads and articles for KoRn, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock, I found an article on a little-known band called Lamb of God and what they were doing to make themselves distinct from what was considered metal at the time. Instead of having all sorts of piercings and multi-colored hair, these were dudes had the more traditional metal look with the long hair and genuine grit.
Well, while their more critically acclaimed New American Gospel came out to little fanfare, when this album was released, all of a sudden the trends started shifting as to what "metal" was. The kids who were rushing out to cover "Blind" stopped and started covering songs like "Ruin" (Think I'm exaggerating? I've seen exactly that happen, more than once, and I couldn't make it up if I wanted to.) This new alternative to nu-metal didn't have to be straight noise and reinforced the idea that both NWOAHM and metalcore could be musical. Not long after the album was released, the trends shifted, and the kids who were previously listening to bands that had roots in mainstream music (such as Korn, Tool, and Deftones) were now starting to find roots in bands that were a bit more underground, such as At The Gates, Carcass, and other acts associated with grindcore and extreme metal. Does that mean some of the kids who listen to this aren't necessarily "tr00" to metal? Maybe, but there's probably a lot of other kids who got into great metal thanks in part to this band and their efforts.
This CD rocks. While there isn't a dull moment on this album, the songs "Ruin", "11th Hour", "A Devil in God's Country" and "Vigil" are what I feel to be the standout tracks on this album. I recommend this to metal fans, fans of music who understand the need to sing in aggressive tones, and anyone who needs to take a cross-country drive but is allergic to caffeine.

As The Palaces Burn Sep 06, 2008 Metal is one of my favorite types of music and I have amassed a lot of it. One of my favorite bands from the genre is Pantera. I see some Pantera in Lamb of God. That is a good thing. Have no fear, they are not a copycat band. After reading a lot about Lamb of God and listening to song samples, I decided on getting this album and Sacrament. Really good bada** guitar riffs and vocals. Both are excellent and worthwhile titles, and if you like Metal, you should probably add them your collection. Enough said.

Astonishing Jun 11, 2008 1st off id like to say im not rating this a perfect 5 stars, im going with 4 1/2 stars, but that rounds up to 5 anyways.
I have ashes of the wake and sacrament. id figure i take a trip back in time and get LOGs older stuff.
I got burn the preist and new american gospel. they were ok. they were A LOT heavier than i expected. u cant understand randy in either of those albums, and the songs are short and the guitar riffs arent as memorable or catchy as in AOTW or sacrament. but they were definately brutal, to say the least.
so then i listen to as the palaces burn.
amazing cd. this is were LOG started maturing into an amazing band with great overall musicianship. the cd is very good. everything you love from the AOTW and sacrament you will find in this album.
it makes AOTW seem like 'As the palaces burn 2.0'
if you want to download one song to see an example of the cd, the best song i think is 11th hour.
RECOMMENDED TO ALL METAL FANS.
