If you were in college in the mid 90s and don't have this one, check your head! Jan 24, 2010 I was an AIC fan from their very first release. Things really began to get intense Jar of Flies was released, followed soon thereafter by their appearance on MTV's (For those of you who don't realize it, the initials stand for Music Television, not Survivor for those too damn dumb to meet the reptilian aspect of the brain qualifications of Survivor. I heard that Kurt Cobain took a shot gun pretty seriously, as I sat in the floor of one of my fellow grad students, which whom I was taking Symbolic Logic: probably the only be I ever made on anything in grad school. But I digress.). The Saturday morning on which I purchased AIC (Purple outer cover, yellow, inner) proved to be a fortuitous one. The brilliance and rolling intensity of this album matched the rest of this fortuitous day to perfection. It is a very well modulated CD, changing pace and demanding more or less attention to really feel the song flow through you. Everyone has heard Grind and God AM (a title and a song with some room to play with), but the song that grabbed me by the neck and cost me several rounds of bones that afternoon was Sludge Factory. It has a certain ambiance to it, which, frankly, is matched only by certain Nirvana songs, when KK was at his sharpest, and his mates played their instruments as if in applause for their sober friend. There is a certain point in the song at which I was sure that the devil was speaking--yes, he is the same one who read the bible anagramically--pardon the neologism, sorry, the word may be an adverb, if I so wish--in Led Zeppelin albums, not to mention what he did on Motley Crew's 10 Seconds to Love, except that I was certain that LS was doing something for our edification, if only we would allow ourselves to receive his message. You'll dig it. For many people, I found that it was that it was Satan who made people appreciate the song, as if suddenly the song were inherently better because of the "voice," which may, who can say, lead to our asking a second question of the same character, in relation to something peculiar to the CD itself. Let me be as straightforward as I can; if you don't have this CD, then you don't have a feel of the true range of AICAlice in Chains
RIP LAYNE STALEY Dec 11, 2009 A lot of people overlook AIC's music because they hear it once and think it sounds like a depressing racket and don't seem to see just how incredibly beautiful some of the harmonies and melodies are. I love the darkness that this album has and there's something almost hypnotic about it (probably all the drug influences) that somehow compells you to listen to it all over again. Album highlights for me are Grind, Sludge Factory, Heaven beside you and Frogs, but almost every song is excellent.
Steep decline in quality Oct 06, 2009 Granted, the brilliance of Jar of Flies was a tough act to follow, but unfortunately Tripod doesn't measure up to AIC's previous efforts, either. Tripod starts off with three standard sludge tracks before finally perking up with the semi-ballad Heaven Beside You. This is followed by two more standard sludge tracks before we come upon Shame In You and God Am, two of the bands most underrated and obscure songs. These are followed by three more sludge songs until the album ends with the great Over Now.
There are times when it's clear that bands are becoming strained and starting to lose inspiration, and Tripod is one of the best examples of this. It's not a bad album, but the songwriting is clearly not up to par. Most of the tracks lack propulsion, hooks, and decent solos, and a few of them seem to go on forever. One of the problems is that AIC really lost their hard rock edge that was so prevalent on Facelift and certain songs of Dirt; the heavy songs of Tripod are too slow, sludgy, and dull. Still, the album is worth a listen if you're a fan of the band.

$6.99 Vinyl from GoHastings is a CD! FYI... Aug 05, 2009 Great album but don't expect to be getting the record for $6.99 from GoHastings. If you order it from this seller then you will receive the CD. It's ashame that this continues to be listed at $6.99 from them as the only reason it's a best selling "record" right now is because of the wrong price.
