Straight-forward rock and roll worth noticing Jul 07, 2008 Forget the politics. Forget the hype. Remember the music. These guys keep it simple. Loud guitars, strong vocals, excellent songs. "Ahead of the Lions" is what rock and roll was created to be in the first place. Pop it in, turn it up, drive fast and love life!
undercooked, overhyped, underwhelmed Aug 05, 2007 maybe i would feel differently if Spin magazine hadn't made these guys out to be the second coming of Nirvana. it's not a bad record, 3 or 4 of the songs are even rather good. but anyone who read that article knows exactly what i'm talking about. i also realize that it's unfair to judge the brothers' Berlin based on the ramblings of some glorified rock critic. but, such is the world we live in. another thing that makes me cringe is the coverage and accolades of singer lillian's "reactionary" antics. what's that? he burns a picture of Bush on stage during every show? oooooooohhhhhhhh, what a REBEL! also, and this is what really irks me, is how supposedly "anti-corporate" they are. well, you know what? i believe that IS "Bom Bom Bom" on that ridiculous Verizon commercial. if they had such a problem w/ the music industry, they could have issued their record on any number of RESPECTABLE independent outlets. this kind of posturing amounts to having yr whole foods tofu sponge cake and eating it too. finally, and i'm not even sure if this is a bad thing, but this is the 1st record by everybody's favorite shadow "engineer" that doesn't have his signature sound, i.e. immaculate drum sounds, vocals pushed back in the mix, etc. Even after this gripe-fest, these boys are young, and i believe they have potential, unless NME or RS start proclaiming them the "next big thing..."

Support artistic dissent Apr 09, 2006 So far I've only heard one song from this album, on a community radio station - KGNU in Boulder/Denver (it streams online for people who want to hear what an incredible world of music non-commercial radio can provide). The song was "Bombs Below," and I appreciated what they had to say. I regularly hear all sorts of thoughtful music from around the world on community radio and could never afford to buy the CDs of all the artists I enjoy, but what convinced me to order this particular CD was an article on them in the "Boulder Weekly" newspaper that noted that the lead-singer, Lillian Berlin, "was left with cracked ribs and a concussion, the result of a beating he received when some Dallas concert-goers took exception to his criticisms of President Bush during a concert earlier that evening. Berlin's attackers punctuated their assault by firing a pistol right next to the singer's head." Due to the corporatist media, there's an extremely belligerent, misinformed and jingoist segment of our population. Thankfully it's a minority; and thankfully, there are groups like "Living Things" who are challenging the thoughts of violent and authoritarian elements of our society. Let's hope more people support the work of dissident artists who are making an effort to undercut our country's superiority complex and militarism.
People who appreciate the political stance of "Living Things" may also want to check out the punk rock group "Propagandhi," and the documentary on the military industrial complex, "Why We Fight."

In your face rhetoric from guys that SHOULD matter to you. Oct 29, 2005 If you are to the "left" you should pick up this album for the lyrics alone. If you are anywhere else, but you are mature enough to appreciate good music, you should still pick it up. Otherwise, dont bother.
These guys are truely putting the music in your face. They send a wall of sound at you that sometimes is a little hard to swallow untill you take it a time or two. The fact of the matter is, this band has some real potential to put out politically driven albums the likes of which havent been seen in probably 30 years or so. Right now they still seem like they are trying to get their heads around what their sound really is. Sometimes they break into strait up rock riffs and others they sound like they are about to play a mindless pop punk song (thankfully they always save those).
Potential asside, the album does take a listen or two, outside of "Bom Bom Bom," to really get comfy with. Its very agressive and takes a bit of getting use to. Once it starts falling into place it becomes extreamly enjoyable.
If you are looking for a breath of fresh air, this band is flat out for you.
Key Tracks: "Bombs Below" and "Bom Bom Bom"
