Description:

"New Monica!" shouts Missy Elliott on the single "So Gone," one of five cuts she co-wrote and produced for After the Storm, the singer’s first domestic album since 1998. (An earlier, much different version of the record is available as the import All Eyez on Me.) Drama is the key word here, from the disc’s title on down. Miss E, of course, brings much spark and grit, but even some of the non-Elliott cuts are virtual arias of romance and self-fulfillment, with Monica Arnold pledging her devotion on one track, demanding her key back on another. The album’s success puts her career and artistry back on track, while encouraging hope for more collaboration along the lines of the exciting Missy stuff here. --Rickey Wright

3I was hoping for something out of this world. 3.5 stars.  Dec 16, 2009
December 16th, 2009

But then again, I look back and remember why I've always liked Brandy better than Monica: Brandy's songs were almost always more fun in the past although clearly Monica was the better singer. Now she doesn't sing like she used to and Brandy's voice matured.

But I digress. Here's my review.

After the hideous intro, comes...

2 - Set It Off - This track is arguably the most fun on the album. Too bad there aren't more tracks like this. A party anthem of sorts. 4 stars.

3 - So Gone - Clearly the most well-known and liked track off the album, the first single brings in the R&B vibe. It features nice production from Missy and shows how Monica loves her man but he basically dogs her. I actually don't mind Missy yelling all over the track. Maybe I'm used to it! 4.25 stars.

4 - U Should've Known Better - Not a bad track but not excellent either. It's another R&B song but this one features Monica telling a guy that he doesn't have to doubt her because even though he's locked up, she's gonna be there for him. Has a guitar solo for the bridge. 3.5 stars.

5 - Don't Gotta Go Home (Feat. DMX) - A decent collabo, but not much to say about the song. The title speaks about what goes on in the song. Better than the previous track. 3.75 stars.

6 - Knock, Knock - LOVE this one. The production is simple yet addictive and Monica spits the lyrics very street-like. She gets sassy on this one with her ex who wants her back. 4 stars.

7 - Breaks My Heart - Typical-sounding ballad. Not the worst offender here. 3.25 stars.

8 - I Wrote This Song - Not a bad song per se, but the chorus kinda gets on my nerves after a while. I like it more than U Shoulda Known Better though. 3.5 stars.

9 - Ain't Gonna Cry No More - Has an alright flow but I wish Monica would have put in more uptempos like Set It Off. 3.5 stars.

10 - Go To Bed Mad (Feat. Tyrese) - Tyrese out-sings Monica on her own song and in a way that's good because otherwise, this song is just OK. I thought I liked it a lot, but it's also very typical. Tyrese's part really does save it. 3.5 stars.

11 - Hurts The Most - Boring to most males. Skip it unless you are a girl. It's all about the lyrics in this one. 2.75 stars.

12 - That's My Man - Boring as hell too. Worst offender. She shouldn't have put so many personal songs on here, because they are boring as hell. 2.5 stars.

This CD starts off kinda strong but then loses steam towards the end with boring ballad after boring ballad.

All in all, a

3.5 star effort.

4It's really good  Jan 06, 2007
I like this Monica album sooo much but the version I got has 13 songs total (it doesn't have U Deserve in it). All i can say is daaammmn! Monica did her thang! I would have to say my favorite song is a duet with Tyrese called Go To Bed Mad. This should've been a single. I also like Don't Gotta Go Home, I Wrote This Song, Breaks My Heart, Knock Knock, U Should've Known Betta, So Gone, & Get It Off.....basically I really like this album and at first I wasn't sure I was gonna like it but it was worth it. Don't sleep on this album!
