Description:

It's often said that a musician's debut represents the culmination of a lifetime's worth of experiences, but their sophomore effort is usually derived from just the intervening year. By waiting 12 years between The Red Shoes and her new double CD, Aerial, Kate Bush has tried to regain that lifetime. It's a remarkably coherent recording, reflecting the unique world of sound and spirit Bush has inhabited since her debut. The first disc, subtitled A Sea of Honey, is a suite of personal reveries. It ranges from "King of the Mountain," a contemplation of unbridled celebrity and its isolation that references Elvis and Citizen Kane, to the piano-and-voice study "Mrs. Bartolozzi," an ode to household chores whose chorus is "Sloshy sloshy sloshy sloshy, get that dirty shirty clean." With its Depeche Mode-influenced synth pads, electro pulses, and lyric cadences, "King of the Mountain" is vintage Bush pop. But many of the songs attain more epic proportions, like the dynamic "Joanni," a hymn to Joan of Arc. It's the second disc--a suite called A Sky of Honey--on which Bush really comes into her own. Using metaphors of the turning of the day and the flight of birds, she orchestrates a meditation on the cycles of life. Musically expansive, she weaves her compositions out of birdsong, subtle orchestrations, and jazz trios, showing herself at her experimental best. Embracing her relatively new motherhood, as well as the death of her mother, Aerial is a deeply personal album, and a welcome return from one of pop music's true icons and vocal wonders. --John Diliberto

5Kate has done it again  Aug 16, 2009
This cd is very very good. However you must be a fan of kate to actually get it. The music goes in so many differient ways. Disc two is very interesting. It is so good, but like I said you should be a fan of her to really enjoy it. She has so much talent and this cd shows it.

2Bland  May 01, 2009
I've owned this album for 4 years now. I keep meaning to get it off the shelf for another listen, but rarely do. Tonight I had another go and once again remember why this CD gathers so much dust. I suppose its nice enough, in a bland sort of way. A few nice songs on A Sky of Honey. Not much to say about Sea of Honey except 'yawn'. Kate's a fine musician and it still shows. Pity the songs are so boring.

5Disc 2 is Magic  Mar 26, 2009
As others have mentioned, there are really 2 albums here and they need to be reviewed separately.

The first disc is very good, but it's not modulating with my inner soul.

I simply can't stop listening to disc 2. The songs go by so fast, it's that good. It really starts to get amazing starting with "Sunset". I recommend that you put some headphones on and listen to it while you're falling asleep in the dark - it will make more sense.

I'm not going to try to explain this in detail. Music transcends that, particularly this music.

4Make another one please!  Dec 09, 2008
Some people seem to think this is the Kate Bush version of 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'. A long wait for a load of rubbish. It is not. Simply stunning. And not the same as earlier work but still very much Kate.
Pi and the one about washing sheets probably aren't for everybody but they have certainly grown on me. The final 2 tracks live permanantly on my ipod and are bollocking good for working out and running.
One of my favorite albums I own, I listen to it all the time. I would only give about 10 albums I have ever listened to 5 stars but if I derive the same pleasure from listening to this in 10 years then it would deserve them.

5Kate's still got it  Nov 18, 2008
This is a lovely album. I can't wait until she comes out with another. Up to now, I have listed to the first of the two CDs more, so I know it more, and love it. Some of the songs simply scratch an itch from the inside. I'm looking forward to 'learning' the second CD.
