An absolute masterpiece Feb 07, 2010 This album is an ultimate representation of music as art in its pure form. Written by four good friends: McCready, Martin, Baker, and Staley just for the sake of music itself, and not for acquiring fame or commercial success, this unique record is as close to a masterpiece as it gets. It is not an easy listen, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The music has enough hooks and beautiful melodies to grab your attention on the first listen, and Layne's magnificent haunting vocals illuminate the record's multidimensional, introspective and sincere lyrics. At the same time, this record is very rough around the edges, it's not even and well polished, and requires a deeper level of understanding, which comes after listening to it multiple times. Only then every sound on the record falls into place, and allows for a much greater enjoyment of this masterpiece on different levels. It never grows old, as it constantly evolves with time, more you listen to it.
Some of Layne's Best! Jan 30, 2010 I heard "River of Deceit" on Pandora and liked it. After recieving the album, I loved it all! The song that stands out the most to me is "Artificial Red." The whole album has a very blues feel very similar to the feel of the Alice In Chains Jar of Flies album. "Above" is an album you must own!
Staley Masterpiece Oct 29, 2009 Haunting vocals and and just an incredible effort on all fronts. Encapsulates the Northwest rock and roll scene in the 90's and wraps it up with a bow. Begins with "Wake Up" and doesn't let you go untill it's over with "November Hotel". Great F**king Album!

This album is worth every penny. I love Alice and Pearl Jam, and I also loved Mad Season the very first time I heard this album. Tracks 1 and 8 are exceptionally soothing in my opinion. I enjoy this album from start to finish. Play it on a warm summer night when you're out for a drive or hanging around by the beach. You won't regret it...

For every AIC fan May 12, 2009 Haunting and beautiful - chill music for the AIC fan. Want to know if you'll like it? Listen to "Wake Up": the cool jazz chime of that xylophone over a pulsing, almost sub-sonic bass, as Layne Staley cries: "Slow suicide's no way to go..." I'm a big Pearl Jam and AIC fan and this album blew me away.
