Description:

Chilly, forced, and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols, and trio of tunes penned by Beyonce Knowles doesn't conjure a single warm and fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with their own trills and off-kilter harmonies, obscuring the songs' simple beauty. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song, a takeoff on the "12 Days of Christmas," without ever explaining why they lopped off four days. The band is shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, like renaming "Carol of the Bells" "Opera Bells" and recasting "Silver Bells" as "Platinum Bells" to reflect their multiplatinum status. But the low point of the record is when Destiny's Child hawk their Hasbro-manufactured dolls in the intro of "Platinum Bells": "Ladies, remember long ago we asked Santa to give us Christmas dolls? This year the dolls are you and me under the tree." Humbug. --Jaan Uhelszki

1Do not buy it unless you hate yourself, and Christmas!  Dec 18, 2009
Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse than "8 days of Christmas", along comes "Platinum bells", and the downright unbearable "Carol of the Bells" (so bad that I couldn't stop laughing through the entire song).

Yikes!

1The world's worst Christmas album by far  Dec 09, 2009
This album stinks. The music is poorly, carelessly produced. The singing is lazy, self-indulgent, meandering, pretentious, aimless and pointless. Listen to "Little Drummer Boy" if you don't believe me.

I find it hard to imagine the kind of music lover who would like this "music"?

The album has its uses, however - it would make a great "room clearer" when guests tend to stay too long or when unwanted relatives overstay their welcome on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Maybe the album sounds profound when played backwards or if the listener is completely and utterly blind drunk.

3Not Horrible (3 1/2 stars)  Dec 17, 2008
At first I didn't really like this CD. I only bought it because it was on sale for $6, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me a bit.

Cons:
- Some of the arrangements do not compliment the holiday season and they sound bland ("Platinum Bells", "White Christmas").
- Some of the lyrics are ridiculous ("But this year the dolls are you and me", "It's Christmas time with the Churren")

Pros:
- These girls can sing and their harmonizing is beautiful. ("Opera of the Bells", title track),
- Each of the girls have solo songs on this CD, which is nice to see because it showcases their individuality. ("Silent night", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "O Holy Night")
- Some of the tracks are really fun ("Winter Paradise" - which creatively samples George Michael's "Father Figure" - and "A DC Christmas Medley".)

Overall, this CD is actually a nice listen during the holiday season. Check it out.
