Three little women, one big voice... Jan 20, 2010 When listening to the lyrics to some of these songs, you can tell the age of the singers; but if you are just listening to the voices (especially that of lead singer Adrienne Bailon), you would NEVER guess that they were barely out of puberty at the time of this albums recording. I remember when this CD was first dropped. I had heard `No More' on the Disney Channel (yes, I was that young) and I really liked it. Then I saw the album cover and thought Adrienne was incredibly hot (still think so) and so I purchased the album.
So vain.
When a youngster myself I really loved this album. Now that I'm older I look back at this album with different eyes. What is surprising is that, for the most part, it still holds up as entertaining and accessible. Sure, there is a silliness that comes with girls barely in their teens singing about love and loss and intimacy (and there is even something a tad creepy about the latter), but there is such maturity in Adrienne's voice that she almost (I mean the `almost' part) makes you completely forget her age.
That, and some of these songs are just really good.
For me, the best here is `Is You Feelin Me'. I just love the beat and the whole vibe. I also really like the remix of `No More', featuring Naz (that's always a good thing), and I find that the remix ages much better than the single, which comes across almost amateurish on reflection. I think that would be my main complaint with a chunk of this album; it comes across not only dated (some of the beats are very 90's) but it also carries with it a `Disney' feel that they shed for their sophomore album. You can tell that they are trying to be more mature but they can't help but come across a bit too young at times.
To me, songs like `Crush on You' and `More Than Friends' play to the age of the singers with nice flourishes of fun material, and so they really mesh well with the girls. Even `Playas Gon' Play' has a cheeky playfulness that doesn't seem too `out of bounds' for these girls. When they tackle more adult material (like on `Gettin Too Heavy') it comes off rather unnatural for me. It's hard, because I genuinely like the song (as well as `Curious'). They are beautifully sung and they have an earnestness to them, but they just don't set well when you take in all the factors.
I mean, girls this young shouldn't be singing these songs; right?
The only songs that I outright don't like, for various reasons, are `I'm Gonna Make You Miss Me', `Not This Time' and `Til I Say So'. They just don't do anything for me. They are either bland (`I'm Gonna Make You Miss Me'), too immature (`Not This Time', mainly the chorus which annoys me) or too, well...I just don't like `Til I Say So' at all.
And then you have `Ocean'. As far as soft ballads go, this one is really sublime. Like I said, Adrienne can sing, and she really excels here.
So, this is a pretty good album. I understand that these girls had an uphill climb, and I know that my review seems almost contradictory. They can't win for losing. When they act their age they become too `Disney' and lose their edge and appeal, but when they act too mature they come off almost creepy (well, they make me feel creepy) and come off irrelevant. There is a balance there on some of these tracks, and they served up a better album their second go around (a little older, a little more cheeky). In the end though, I still like this album a good deal.
3LW step into the spotlight then step out May 20, 2007 They did an awesome job on this Cd and many others but now that Kiely and Adrienne have gone with The Cheetah Girls (which are good two) they have sort of ditched 3LW. Now I think this CD is awesome but now it's like 3LW does not exsist. My fave song on this Album is No More (baby Ima Do it Right)
I highly recomend this CD to anyone who likes Pop and R&B music
Strong debut shows promise Jan 25, 2007 There's no denying that these girls can sing, especially lead singer Adrianna who can really blow for her tender young age (she was quite young when she recorded this album, in fact they all were). Complete with strong beats and smooth vocals, 3LW delivers just what the doctor ordered.
Starting things off with their smash it 'No More (Baby Ima Do Right)' these girls cement themselves as the next Destinys Child, complete with the strong lead vocals (and like Beyonce, Adrianna is somewhat of a mic hog...but she can sing so why not). The song may be your generic 'Bug-A-Boo' type riff but it's catchy and enjoyable.
Personally their second track, 'Is You Feelin Me?', is my favorite track here. The beat is tight and the lyrics are sung with confidence and perfect pitch. This is one that was made for the clubs.
'Playas Gon Play' has more of a happy vibe to it, very bouncy. This was their second single and it works. The girls here sing about the strength of their relationships with their men and all the trust they have in him. See, not every song here will be about how much men suck!
The girls next break out the first ballad of the album with 'Gettin too Heavy'. Here the girls plead with their man to take things slow and not push them into...you know, that thing us guys can't help but want so badly. The song is effective, the vocals once again are smooth, especially throughout the verses...the chorus gets a bit whiney but it's not too bad.
There next track is even smoother...an uptempo ballad called 'I'm Gonna Make You Miss Me' which is about just that, making her ex miss her. The beat is nice and simple but it does the trick. Great vibe.
Okay, heres the deal with 'Not This Time'...I love the spanish type guitar opening...love the infusing of techno type influence...Absolutly LOVE the verses...sung great and sound awesome...it's just that uppity chorus that drives me crazy...It's too, whats the word, little girlish...lame...annoying. The bridge, the rap, Adrianna's vocals, everything else but that freaking chorus...
Now everything that I hate about 'Not This Time', that uppity girliness, is what I LOVE about 'More Than Friends (That's Right)'. This song just grows and grows on me, in a good way, and makes me smile. The whole song is so upbeat and happy even though she's singing about loving a boy who loves someone else. It's just a really good song.
'Curious' is a real shell-shock for me. Here these girls channel great R&B groups like En Vogue with their smooth vocals, their classic beats and their maturity in tone, in lyrical content and delivery. I really like this song, and while it may not fit with the flow or even vibe of the rest of the album it's truly a great ballad. This song alone shows the promise these girls had. It's a real shame they went the way of Disney.
'Til I Say So' is another great club type song with lyrical content along the same lines as the ballad 'Gettin Too Heavy'. It's got fun lyrics, good vocals and a fun beat. If you like 'No More' then you'll like this one too.
'Crush on You' starts off a little annoying with those 'ya ya ya' stuff, but once that's over the song is catchy and fun. Singing about going behind their parents back to 'crush' on some guy, these girls sound strong here. Their harmonies and vocals in general mesh well together. The whole song is good, besides that intro. I really like the bridge...you'll see what I mean about harmony.
'Ocean' is probably their slowest softest track here. It's sweet and, after a few listens, I assume this is about love for God. At first I thought it was about yet another boy and then maybe a parent but I'm pretty sure it's another 'I love you God' type ordeal. It's a sweet track, but not one I listen to all that often.
The remix for their hit single featuring Nas closes out the album brilliantly. Nas is a great addition and the beat is fantastic. It's nice to see a real remix, not just the same song with rap at the end...lyrics, beat everything is different and even better than the original. Great addition and awesome way to close out the album.
So in closing, this is a great debut album despite the 'girliness'...these girls are great singers and very talented. It's sad they've moved on to smaller things, leaving the world of R&B and Hip-Hop for Disney, which may have given them a larger fan base and more money but wastes their talent. Oh well, we always have this to look back on and see what could have been. At least they put out an impressive sophomore album.
